Title: Home Again ( CD, Billy Doc, Gbm, Albino )
Post by: CosmicDolphin on August 04, 2015, 04:02:04 AM
Another song finished for the "Dark Dolphin" Project

Wow, I've just checked and this song was started over a year ago . I wanted a more laid back song for the album and wrote the basic tune for this. It was difficult to know which direction to take it in as some good initial ideas were posted but eventually it found it's own identity due to the skill and musicianship of the people involved. In April I started singing lessons so I can improve the final vocals on my own songs and this was the track I practised over and over with my teacher. although it's far from perfect I think it's much better and am continuing to enjoy the lessons..Never too late to teach an old dog some new tricks. Massive thanks to everyone who helped with this one.  :)

Home Again

Verse
Nobody knows what has got me
Or worked out a way to stop me falling
Into a world cold and empty
Filled with the things that were made to tempt me

Chorus
I'm so broken inside
That nothing is scared, my soul is denied
All of the little things that bring so much joy
Taken away from me when I was a boy
And I just can't go home again

Verse
Everyone knows that I'm sliding
Into the abyss
Where there is no hiding
Pulls me away from my senses
Stripped to the bone of my own defences

Chorus

I'm so broken inside
That nothing is scared, my soul is denied
All of the little things that bring so much joy
Taken away from me when I was a boy
And I just can't go home again

Bridge

And as this nightmares clearing
Your name is all I'm hearing

Verse
Everyone knows what has got me
And worked out a way to stop me falling
Into a world cold and empty
Devoid of the things that were made to tempt me

Chorus

I'm so broken inside
That nothing is scared, my soul is denied
All of the little things that bring so much joy
Taken away from me when I was a boy
And I just can't go home again

Thank you for the compliment. It is such a killer song that, even though it's not in my comfort zone its easy to tap into. That's the mark of a great song. You should be very proud of how your seed has grown into this epic.
Well done everyone else involved to turn this into the epic song that it is. Great work  8)

Very nice... A lot of flavours from 80's pop synths to great orchestral string...

... Great mix of textures. Good tune, folks.

Albino used the word 'epic'. True! A tremendous song, guys, from the lyrical story to the top-notch music and all-round performance. CD, your voice sounds so good here.

Sounds great, Mark. You can hear the difference in your singing ability. Very impressive. Where would you put this on the album....song 2?

To me it´s the "classic" ballad on an album.
In the "early days" these songs where on no. 3 or 4 of an album... ;D

This would be the hit on the album, unless all the other songs on the album are hits too?  ;D ;D

Cheers Gary  :)

Yes, it's hard to know where it will sit in the end. The running order is an art in of itself. My gut feeling is next to last because it has quite a climax and then it can be followed by the final song.. the denoument it you will....and I already have this song that Billy helped me put together called "Trying" which is purely piano, string and vocals that seems tailor made to be the final track.

You never know though until you try it !

Hi Mark,

Lovely track. Cool discordant notes to start the song off.

All the performances are top notch. Very strong vocal too.

Steve's drums are very good too, but did they need a touch more body in the mix?

Thanks for the compliment AndyG.

The drum sound obviously fall's in with CD's vision for his project.

I, of course, wish there were no syth, guitars, vox or bass. Just drums.  ;) ;D ;D

Yeah I think they are at the right level. If you listen to different records they are at all different levels.. I remember buying " Battle For the Sun" the Placebo Album and thinking how "big & heavy" the drums sound was compared to other CD's I had.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RBeCgtgr6Rs

It's a good reference, if I have mine any louder then I know I've gone too far ! But in every mix there's only so much space..notice how much fatter they sound at 2:06 when there's less going on in the track. When the full arrangement kicks in they are a bit more buried.

This is your best song so far IMO, Mark! Great job, and much better than most of today's charts crap.

Cheers Steffen , my singing teacher reckons I can still improve on it but goodness knows how long it will take to sing a better vocal than this one. I may try it again in 6 months and see how it comes out, at least I have this one in the bank.

A year later and I'm still working on this !  :D

HELLO MCS

Who's still watching ?  I have new vocals, a new mix and I'm just in the middle of working on my harmonies with my singing teacher so I hope to finish it by Christmas  8)

Here is a little teaser of the harmony part..it has compression & reverb but none of the vocals have been auto-tuned.

OMG That sounds soooo good. I mean, it really sounds great. I see why you mentioned the no auto tune now.
Every penny spent on your vocal coach is obviously paying off.
I may invest for myself.  ;D

Steve.

Very nice, Mark! Your vocal quality is pretty good.

The harmony vocals aren't in sync though - you'll have to make sure they are tight.

Steve.

Definitely worth it if you have access to a good one and are prepared to put the effort in

It's been 1yr 8 months since I started them and I've practised most days for at least half an hour or more. I tend to go over my exercises in the car whilst commuting quite a bit which helps me fit it into my daily routine.

There's no quick fixes though, I still find it very easy to sound rubbish on some songs  ;D ;D

The good thing with me is I have lots of recordings of my singing going back over 25yrs , including a few covers and stuff so it's easy to spot the improvement now compared to back then.

Thanks Steffen, I haven't edited them yet but I think they are pretty close on the whole...it makes a difference when the music is in as well as I'm singing in time the the drums as well
