Title: Are You Lonely
Post by: Studioplayer on May 15, 2008, 06:49:49 PM
Ok, Got this one done.  :)  Spent a bunch of time mixing this baby down and it wasn't easy that's for sure but I'm pretty happy with where I have it and think it sounds pretty good. Cosmic was also taking a crack at the mixing so we have 2 versions of the mixdown. I think he still wants to tweak his  ;D

Rockin' tune guys.  >:D This one was a blast.  It came together quite smoothly and you guys put a lot of heart and soul into it. Todd really worked out the drums. Crazy man !!!  ;D Would love to do more.

Also I just wanted to mention that Steve did this only days after his Mom had passed and although I never mentioned it, my Mother also passed a few weeks after Steve's. Strange timing since we were right in the middle of this song. So for me this song represents not death but life. To live moment to moment increasing knowledge and enjoying life. It's a lonely path we take but "All is Good, All is Real". I'm not sure if this was Steve's intentions but this is what I get from the song. It was a good one for me and perfect in it's timing.

Again thanks guys.  8)

Update: Nick has also added his mix. This was a challenging mixdown and it kinda turned into a mixoff so if anyone is willing to listen to all 3 and make any comments please do so. It's one thing to write songs and it's another to learn to mix & master. What a great place for practicing. Thanks, Dave

Are You Lonely

Are you lonely?
Are you lonely?

Patterns developing, questions, questions
I've been along this road before
Is it me or you seeking all the answers?
Searching through the open door
In the distance there's a beckoning
Along with relentless reckoning

All is Good, All is Real
All is everything and the way we feel
All is All and nothing other
Sister, Brother, Father, Mother

Are you lonely?
Are you lonely?

Why do you ask, do you think it's a mask
Looking out from behind a veil
Every day is a school day, always learning
To new horizons set the sails
Knowledge increasing as ignorance decreasing
Quest for more, let sense prevail

All is Good and All is Real
All is everything and the way we feel
All is All and nothing other
Sister, Brother, Father, Mother

Are you lonely?
Are you lonely?
Are you lonely?

Looking inside trying to make sense of it all
Knowing the bubble will burst and then the tears they will freely fall

Up and down and round and round
This speeding roller coaster makes no sound
Whether over rolling hills or underground...............Are you lonely?
Are you a machine, have you a beating heart?
When does your true emotion start?
Try displaying love, we all know you're smart..........Are you lonely?
Meet these new horizons, take them in your stride
So everything you do is with a sense of pride
Do you meet things head on or just run and hide....Are you lonely?
Negative meets positive but poles apart
Logic and emotion surely play their part
Where does your displaying of emotion start............Are you lonely?

Are you lonely?

Solo  >:D

Amidst the sea of faces
Are you lonely?
Expressing empty spaces
Are you lonely?

Nick is going to put up his mix as well so comments on the mixing would be really cool. Different approaches happening here. We kinda made this a mix off. Tough one to do.

Get yours up a soon as you can Nick.  :)

Thanks George, As this was being mixed down Nick fell into a mixing rut. Got kinda burnt out. I think this song pushed him over the edge. ;D but now he's making music instead so that's a good thing.  Anyways to finish it I had to go at it. CD also offered to mix it and we decided to both have a go at it. Well... Nick has now decided that he can finish mixing so we now have 3. I think it's quite cool so we can see how we all do. I only got a chance to listen to Nick's mixdown briefly but so far I'd say he has the best mix going. Everythings really bright and clear. It's one thing to make the songs but another to mix them. This was a good song to try mixing since there was like 40 tracks to do. AND that was just Steve's vocals.  :D

Thanks for listening George.  8) Hope we get to jam one of these days!!

Paulo & Luis, thanks for listening. Really appreciate it.  8) Thanks CD.

I think all 3 of us got some pretty good mixes happening but after comparing them I would say Nick has got the clearest mix happening. (Kick is still a bit strong though). Mark's is pretty good too and mine is still a bit muddy. How come? Jeez.. I really thought my mix sounded good but after comparing I can really see the difference.

Nick. What's your trick? How can I make my mix less muddy? Man.. I need to learn to do this better.  >:(

Mark, Any tips?
Title: Re: Are You Lonely

Mark, Any tips?

Well...about 20 years of practice helps  ::)

Your eq's & FX sound fine, but after a few ( hundred  >:D ) listens I'd say it sounded a little ' hollow '...muddy wouldn't be the word I'd use....lot's of space in your mix, maybe too much.

Maybe put the Sonar Bundle up on your FTP and I can take a look to compare.

One thing I noticed is later in the song , you didn't ride the guitars up , as they seem to be pushed back in the mix.

I did more fader rides on this than nearly all the other collabs put together  ;D

Nick's sounds much better than previously to me ..like you say there are a few spots where the kick seems to poke through...We can blame Todd for kicking it too hard, but I made sure to fade that part down quite a bit to keep it level.

Though I do like your overall drum soud Nick, so please reveal how to get that kinda sound, it's not one I seem to be able to get.  More American/Smooth sounding...think I grew up listening to different kinda drums....so I'd like to be able to do both.

CD

PS     - Dave you're a much better mixer than I am a guitarist  ::)

PPS   - And Nick can do both very well :o

PPPS - Never heard him sing though, or write lyrics, or paint a picture  >:D

Guess we all have our unique talents guys - Keep it up.     ;D

Well I've been flipping through the mixes and both you guys are much clearer than me. Too hollow is probably a better word. In yours CD I noticed the drums are buried in the mix though. Todd does a killer transition just before the lead and I can barely hear it in yours. I think they could come out more. Not sure if you agree with that.  ??? Nicks drums are really forward. I'll have to listen tonight in the studio and see how it all sounds. I like this though. What a better way for me to learn than to see other mixes from both you guys who do it all the time. It gives me a really good comparison to work from. I'll keep practicing.  :)

Dave

Yeah..I tried to keep in consistant with songs I've been listening to lately....Nick does have them very up front in comparison

I think I've faded the other instuments up more than the drums as the song progresses, and not so much the drums, and I tried not to add too much compression to them, I hear they get a little ' sunk ' later on in the track.

I was still only about 88.75 % happy with it  ;D

I don't sing well but can paint (art major) and write lyrics. :)

My drum mixes are the result of trying to make our songs cross over to sound as pro as we can get. What i mean by that is that drums are the hardest things to get to sound pro out of all the things we play with. One of the things that got me writing again was finding drums on demand as a way to make my demo's sound "pro studio".

I also mixed in J. Halls IMP projects at Prosoundweb.com. Had the man himself crtique my mixes. I start all my mixes with the drums and build around them. I found an EQ chart that is a great starting point for each drum. I comp The tracks and send them to a drums master. I also use a drum buss where I comp the whole drum mix and blend it back with the original until I get the punch i need.

I use a lot of subtractive EQ in my mixes. I will also add a high shelf EQ when I think things are dull.

I feel the modern mix is drum and kick heavy "more click than thud" but also add in the low stuff to keep it full.

Long conversations with Cary about toms and snares.

I didn't use any samples in this mix but I don't rule them out if I need them.

I was about 90% ok with my mix. I could probably make another pass if I had the time.

As far as the kick, I went in and actually did a 3db cut on the high level hits before I hit it with the comp and limiters.

Hope that helps a little.

Nick

By taking out the extreme highs helps in dullness?  ???

Maybe we should have an on going mix thread one of these days. It would help to understand some of the issues in a mix.  :)

Thanks to everyone for the coments. :) :) :)

Yeah, it was a total (very sad) coincidence regarding your mum Dave and extreme condolences bro.

My conclusion is that I play with 100% heart and a variable %age of head as needed (the head part being limited only by my experience)

I think the same is true for all the people associated with music and the scale just slides on the %ages depending on what we are trying to do (e.g. I think you will be using a lot more head knowledge when mixing Nick compared to when you are writing a guitar part).

And I always get a little nervous when posting deep things like this in case there is a negative side I haven't thought of (problem of not being able to fully explain via the said word), I am saying you guys are all brilliant and a great forum to be involved with and create in :) :)

All is good and all is real :) :)

Returning from vacation shortly and we can get back to more of the same :)

Incidentally thanks Ray, your Heart cover is absolutely awesome man and I'm looking forward to hearing that fully completed 8)

I'm also looking forward to hearing these mixes, but that'll have to wait until I get back home since the network connection keeps dropping >:(

What's IMP projects ?...do you have a link to the EQ chart ?

You're right about the drums being the hardest to get a pro sound for...we should be able to get a great sound from Todd's gear.

First off, I've got to repeat what a great song this is. :) As I'm sure I've mentioned to Steve and Todd, I personally think this song captures the best qualities/ essence of Steve's vocals..I basically use this as the gauge to see if any tunes we work on with Steve are making the mark to take advantage and make the best of his vocal qualities..and this is easily as great as anything you'll hear. Out of any rock songs I've heard on the site, this certainly is on the top, if not the top song..I'm leaving personal preferences out of the equation..looking at it purely by what I would think would chart (spend much of my day on the raod, maybe get about 3 hours a day just scanning the staions to see whats new,etc..), along with some of the Ain't TV tunes Steve is on as well. It's heavy enough to make it on the rock stations, but could go to the classic rock or lighter rock stations as well. It's got a little 80's retro to it..which presently is a pretty hot sound...some Canadian bands from the 80's come to mind..Streetheart, Honeymoonsuite kind of vibe. Also, for the bass playing, is certainly one of my favs here..which is funny considering Dave considers himself a guitar player! ;D You guys really nailed this one!
As for the mixes, did alot of a/b's...leaving personal preferences out of it..tried compare to what you'd hear on a big label album..although both sound as good as most of the stuff out there.
I find, overall, Nick's mix is  cleaner and defined..the vocals are crystal clear, center stage, every word loud and clear/Todd's snare has alot more...snap/punch to it...at least on my system, makes it sound better. Personally think the intro should be a hybrid of both...the chunking rythmn a little less pronounced, and more of the background guitar..although, again if I had to pick, I think they would go for Nick's version on the beginning. I do prefer Mark's mix of the guitar during the last bit..but that's more personal preference..like the guitar to crank when it needs to...give it some heaviness, but that's preference...find much of the newer stuff is mixed that way, as compared to 10 or 20 years ago.
Bass is great on both..a little more power (bottom punch) on Nick's I think..those are about the only differences that stand out to myself anyway, but then again, what do I know?..I repair dishwashers for a living, not records! ;D ;D
But this is certainly a highlight of the year I would think..if there was a vote, I'd say track #1 the CD for sure! :)
Good work guys (now that you've got your new toy Dave, start pumping some more killer tunes man! ;D)
Marc

I have both mixes of this on a CD full of rock songs in the car .....I heard it for the first time in a long while, both versions were ok , but neither of them stood out as being 'the one'...

I liked the solidness of Nick's Drums but the guitars dissappeared towards the end.

I liked the way my guitars and rides kept moving with the song to keep the feel going, but overall it was too thin.

So I actually lined Nick's mix and my mix together....right down to sample level accuracy...then I faded one into the other......put a couple of plugs arcross the main buss....one is  a bass mono filter that prevents the bottom end from spreading too wide, and can make it  sound tighter.

Thought it was worth trying as an experiment  ;D

I was actually thinking of that.
I should just put a html5 player on here where you can create a playlist.
I'll look into it.
Hang onto those masters.
I am pretty sure that was where I reached my burnout point. I have most of the songs on the list mastered. Between the two of us, we should have most of the songs.

Thanks,
