Title: The Song For Karna (Andy/Adam/John/Marc/Aidan/Argle)
Post by: AndyG6508 on January 19, 2009, 02:15:52 PM
This is a (lengthy!) tune about a mythological figure, culled from the Indian Epic "the Mahabharata".

Credits:

Adam Rodeh: All guitars, including solos
John Wooten: Drums
Andy Gupta: Lead vocals, bass, hammond organ, electric pianos
Billy Playle: Backing vocals
Marc Traynor: Sound engineering on bass and vocals
Adam Kirby: Final mixing/master

Here's the lyric:

Song For Karna (c) A Gupta, 2008, (Lyrics & Music)

Verse1:

You never knew
Your real mother's love
You were found & raised by others as their own;
Fathered by the Sun God
Blessed with his radiance
Your rightful place was gained too late
A warrior true and brave
A worthy rival (and) a loyal friend
But a chain of circumstances
Brought curses in its stead

Verse2:

Fated against your own
Who walked the Royal path
(You were) befriended by their mortal enemy
You chose your side
Your rivalry intensified
Either you or Arjuna must die
(You became) a true king amongst men
Known for your generosity
You gave away the rings and armour
(The) divine protection against your foes...

Chorus:

You
Were the noblest of them all
A tragic hero standing tall
You were the greatest of them all
You
Were the finest of them all
Though you finally had to fall
You were the greatest of them all

Solo : Guitar solo 1st

Verse3:

And of the war that came
There are legendary tales
Of betrayal, valor and of chivalry
(Your) fortunes ebbed and flowed in war
(But) you stayed true to your ideals
While waiting for that moment to arrive
And on the seventeenth day
You met your Arch rival on the field
You proved yourself more than equal
Before the curse struck you mortally...

Chorus:

You
Were the noblest of them all
The one on the outside
You were the greatest of them all
You
Were the bravest of them all
Though you finally had to fall
You were the greatest of them all

Instrumental Section

End

I would like to thank everyone involved from MCS who helped finish this tune, it turned out to be a very enjoyable experience.

Great drumming from John, exquisite backing vocals from Aidan, lots of practical and moral support from Marc, and finally a great mixing job done by Argle.

All the best,
Andy

Its definetely your sound Andy...can't even think of anyone who could pull of the vox and make it sound geniune like yourself..guitar, kbs, bass, vox, drums, all instruments are spot on and period correct..great mix Argle as well...great job guys! :)(brings me right back to 1977 in the basement stereo room with the black light and furry white carpet, tripping to King Crimson and Floyd! ;D ;D ;D)

Marc's probably doing that right now, he just doesn't want to admit it  ;D ;D, has his studio all set up with his old flare jeans pinned to the wall  :D

The music and the playing are stunning, really memorable. You've done Karna justice. ;)

I agree that your voice is entirely suited to the piece. It sounded great.

Well done, Everyone. ;)

Hi Cass,

Thank you, I am glad you like the song!!

Is it worth being nominated though? Hmmm I somehow dont hink that the average listener would want to sit through an 8 minute song about some guy who died in 2500BC :).

But as long as the folks on MCS like it Im happy!!

Hi Marc,

Well, thank you - for helping to make this great.

Yes, it does have a retro-70s feel, and this would be ideal for that basement stereo room (matched amplifier/deck/speakers!!), a shag carpet, and lots of rock band posters on the wall.

....And the this song would be on vinyl not CD, of course.. inclduing crackling sounds of needle on vinyl during the playin groove!!

I personally love vinyl and I can swear that the Beatles Abbey Road still sounds so much better on LP than the CDs they issued in the late 80s.

Cheers,
Andy

Many thanks for the kind comments, glad you liked the lyric, music and the singing :).

And you mean justice to Karna not Arjuna right? You know where my sympathies lie in that regard!!

Hi Jay,

Thanks for your kind review on the tune and about the vocals. Yes, it was a huge project to undertake, but we managed to pull it off pretty well, i think, thanks to my friends here on MCS!!

I am enjoying listening to your music as well Jay, and I am waiting for the day to see "Falling Down" and "Ocean" in the finished songs section (so I can scoop them onto my i-pod!!)

All the best

Dave and R4m,

Thank you so much for liking the tune.

Dave, just like you, I absolutely dig Floyd and Wishbone Ash, I tried to use their sounds as a template.
