Title: Smile (Holger/Roger/Andy/Tricia/Mr & Mrs. Cosmic Dolphin)
Post by: AndyG6508 on May 04, 2009, 09:58:25 AM
This is a song I was going to scrap until my friend Holger said he liked it...so here it is!!

A simple tune with a simple message...inspired by a remark made by George Harrison in the mid-70s. When asked what would it take to get the Beatles back together for a show, he said "if people promised to smile at one another for one whole day".

The recording of this song turned out to be a breeze...and very pleasant. I basically sat back and watched the song grow!!

All the contributors are stars in their own right - Holger with his plaintive lead vocals, boundless enthusiasm and as de facto commander, Roger with his "cool" Chet Atkins guitar work, Tricia with her honey twinged sweet harmonies, Mark (CD) who came in at the end with valuable suggestions for enhancing the song, and then mixed and mastered the song beautifully, a la Rubber Soul, using vintage equipment "borrowed" off Abbey Road Studio 2 (I understand George Martin owes him a favour or two). And we even had Mrs. CD add some seasoning with a mean shaker!!!

Oh.. I was there too!!!

MCS, I hope you enjoy listening to this song, and I hope it makes you smile as well!!!

:) Smile :) (122bpm, shuffle groove) (C) Andy Gupta 2004,2009

Intro: A/G/D/A

Verse1
                  A
I'm talking to you
There's something we can do
                     D
It won't cost a thing
             A
It's there within
              F#m    B7
 A smile a day
        D                     A
Could set you on your way

Verse2

So let's try it out
Don't need to think about
It takes a little time
In a simple rhyme
A smile a day
Makes the world a warmer place

Bridge:
                   F#m                      A
They say you frown and you sulk alone
            F#m                      A
You're in pain but they stay away
                   D                        Dm                      A                              F# m
But when you smile then you will find that the whole world smiles along with you
           B7                                   E      E7
So let's try it out and let's see if it is true
                    A
You've got to smile...

Guitar Solo (same chords as verse)

Verse3

Give the world a smile
Unused and out of style
Give your neighbour a grin
Feel it bubbling within
A smile a day
Brings us closer today
A smile a day
Brings us closer today
A smile a day
Brings us closer today
Yeah!!!!!

Hello @all,
I was immediately filled with enthusiasm and electrified when Andy showed me this song... and now that we've finished it I love it more than ever.

I'm happy that this nice song is finished. :) Andy it is interesting to know something about the background.

I love this tune and especially the message in it. It is simple but true. And in this song music and lyrics could not match better together!
I hope that George can hear it and that it makes him smile too ;).

It was a pleasure to be a part of this and I hope that the people will like it.

Great work you all!

Ah, I'd like to post the song on my website at myownmusic.de and also myspace. I'm sure that the people there will love it  :)

thx
Holger

What a charming song! Simple and appealing lyric, great music and playing, and excellent vocals and harmony.  :)
(But Tricia, I have to ask: Didn't you find the music dangerously close to country?  ;) )

Kudos all round! :D

Donna,

Thank you for the kind words!! Im happy both the lyric and the sound appealed to you  :).

Country.....?? hmmmm... possibly a touch..in the guitars possibly? I thought it was more a hybrid of Beatles circa 1964-1965, folk music and the Dead  ;)

Oh, the Beatles are definitely in evidence, along with a touch of folk and the Dead. But blow me down if I didn't detect a definite whisper of country here and there.  ;) Must have been in that sweeping guitar work. ;D

Yeah, I'm to blame for the country :) I'm not a big country person, but I try to dabble in the chickin pickin :)

Well...I am a big country person and I think the "chicken-picken" was perfect. If John and Paul had picked Atkins or Haggard over Little Richard, it might of come out this way. I love it.  8)

The lyrics are simple and wonderful, the message is so upbeat and it lightened up my day, wish I had wrote it, great job Andy.   :) :)

I also love the panning of the background vocals. There is a definite Beatles sound to it. Really nice work Mark.  8)

Kudos to everyone, what a good song this is IMHO.

Preston   8) 8)

EDIT: BTW, I meant to say that Holdger's lead vocals sound very close to Harrison's in my opinion.

Preston, interesting thought, John was a major Chuck Berry & Arthur Alexander fan, Paul was into Little Richard, and George's all time fav stars were Carl Perkins and Chet Atkins too. The Beatles for Sale album has got quite a few songs verging on C&W.

The lyrics are simple and wonderful, the message is so upbeat and it lightened up my day, wish I had wrote it, great job Andy.   :) :)

Preston, I'm so glad you grooved to this song, and its wonderful to know that it made your day better, in any way, even for a little while!

I also love the panning of the background vocals. There is a definite Beatles sound to it. Really nice work Mark.  8)

Yeah, CD and I wanted a retro sound, and he used his magic gadgets to make this sound deliciously retro, and he pulled it off in style. He worked out the vocal pannings and effects. As a fellow bass player, you must have noticed the walking bass line similar to "Eight Days A Week" popping up a few times  ;D

Kudos to everyone, what a good song this is IMHO.

Thank you once again Preston, and look forward to hearing more of your tunes!!!

Cheers
Andy

Hello my friends,

thx for all your kind comments! :) I have good news from Germany for you:

Our song is on top of the rock charts on myownmusic, after only 2 days!
http://www.myownmusic.de/genre.php?mainstyle=Rock

the people love the song and the production. I'm not much interested in beeing Nr.1 but what makes me really happy is the fact, that many people wrote me that the song made them smile even if they had a hard day or they were sad. That means: it works! ;D
The overall feedback says that everything is very nice and it has a nice retro sound and the mix is outstanding. Thank you CD! ;)
Ah and: without the nice shaker it would be only half that good  ;D

b.t.w.: Andy, what do you mean with Nena and her 99 Balloons? ??? 8)

Holger,

This is awesome news - congratulations!!! Yes, its good to know that the song's message is reaching out - and if it makes a small difference to someone's day - even for a short while - its all worth it!!

b.t.w.: Andy, what do you mean with Nena and her 99 Balloons? ??? 8)

Well Holger, if you read the previous post, Stoney threatened to force me to listen to Europop, and that made me think of the German singer Nina who had a huge hits in the mid-80s with her song "99 Red Balloons" its also called 99 Luft Balloons!! I am sure CD has a trove of Euro stashed away....

And Holger, thanks once again for making this song happen!!

now I know what you mean  ;) She is from Germany and very famous here. Our days "famous" female Popsingers try to sing like she did. But they all are so terrible, more terrible than the original  ;D I hate this terrible ugly Breath noise brrrrr that the producers are making louder and louder from song to song. Nena did it in a bit sexy way and not so loud.  :D ( ;D I mean the breath noise when she sings ;D )

to the piont
I love songs like this as they get right ot the piont, short and sweet! very nice, is not todays music, well performed, go for it!
- DonaldFisher

Kind of a funky, laid back groove
I liked the guitar/drum interplay. Pop sensibilities in a rock format. Quirky and pleasing to the ear. Overall, a solid performance.
Extra Credit: Male Vocals, Guitars, Drums, Production, Beat.
- Greekguy

and a backhanded compliment:

pop country cool
very good production, the song didnt really grab me, heard alot like it,but very good just the same, like the vocals and guitar work.performance is dead on and arrangement was excellent for this type of song

And here's another rather complimentary review:

Good work Kinksy
nice country feel with acoustic and clean lead g intro - vocal is interesting - curly like the Thrills/Coral -

i really like this track - it has a nice 60s Mungo Jerry or Kinks feel - really good piece of throw back music. simple structuresx - great janlgy lead guitar work from 1.30ish onwards

interesting panned female backing vocals - works well and adds layering to the piece

withpout wishing to blow smoke up your clearly english asses (i am also of this fine nation)- I would buy this track.

Best to you and yours, chris

wow!  :'(  How did he break it so badly?

Falling off the Little Tikes slide in the garden..mind you they had turned it upside down apparently  ::)

He has a Supracondylar fracture, there's a very similar picture here that shows what he did..

Mark,

Looked at the sketch, its rather a bad one!

So did they have to insert pins in place as well??

On the bright side, nows the time to load all your mxes on an ipod and make him choose the ones he likes best - theres going to be 4 weeks for that. Wish him a sppedy recovery.

Gang,

Another one for the book...

Very Delightful!
This song has a great, captivating rhythm. Very catchy melody...This song is full of personality. Reminds me a little of the Beatles. The performance seems very tight. I love the vocal style in this song...It's very British, which I love very much. Excellent arrangement...everything seems to flow very well. I love the happy mood and the positive lyrics. Great job! :)

yes, of course. I knew it from the start and I said it before. Without that incredible shaker this song would be only half that good!  ;)

We have two very talented girls in our band!  :)

Thanks Dave,

I think its a mix of mama + papas + dead + chet atkins + beatles perhaps?

Everyone really pulled in a great performance, and I couldnt ask for a nicer bunch of collaborators to work with!!

Just wanted to add another compliment for this one since it looks like it almost never saw the light of day.

You know when the double-tracked lead vocals come in near the beginning, I can completely convince myself that it's a new Beatles tune with John singing. This is more magical for me than the Beatle's own Free As a Bird was. I sent this one around the office and everyone loved it.

And did anyone comment on what Tricia did near the end? Four completely different harmonies for the same background vocal line. Very nice, I rarely hear background vocals infuse so much personality into a tune.

I liked this song from the moment I heard it , and they were kind enough to let me mix it.....I also thought it had a Beatles vibe  , and I actually used ' What goes on ' as my reference track during the mix.

Nah it's you. I didn't mean 4 harmonies at the exact same point in time. I meant that each time the line came around, you did something different to it. You're turning into a jazz musician with this one.

Oh!  ;D That's what you mean.  ;)  I can't help it. I am bad at remembering what I sang for previous choruses in the same song!! :D I just wing it... ;D

My father was a jazz musician.... he made us sing Four Freshmen harmonies, lol

Peter,

Fancy you digging this song up from the mists of time....thanks so much for the very kind words.

This one was a real collab in every sense of the term - everyone contributed original ideas to the song. Holger intepreted the vocal superbly, Tricia added a heady mix of background harmonies, Roger came up with cool Harrison/Atkins guitar lines, and Mark (CD) did a stellar job of organizing us and coming up with a exquisite 'vintage' mix (check out the wispy/sizzle effect of the vocals at places).

I will always retain fond memories of this one.

Cheers
Andy

PS - What Goes On - that reminds me -- at one point Mark threatened to mix all the guitars on the left and the vocals and drums on the right  ;D.....the Beatles catalogue needs remixing not remastering- specially for ipod listening!!!

This is a great tune guys. It came up on my iPod recently and remembered how much fun it was to play. I LOVE the guitar tones I got. I use that patch a lot on my Tonelab as a starting point for new sounds. Everybody did a great job! Thanks for pulling this out of your vault Andy. One of my faves :)

The old ones are the best !

Great tune..and I don't hate the mix either...and I can't say that about many songs I mixed 5 years ago   ::)

( I think it just goes to show if you use reference song/s when mixing then you do a better job than mixing in isolation )
