Just to add my $0.02 to this ... I went from an older Roland kit (TD-7) to building my own triggers. It's very cost effective and feels better than any of the affordable edrums I've tried. Very very easy to do and there are lots of places with instruction on how to do this. I think there are even a few guys in some of the edrumming forums that sell them pre-built for you... all you need is a drum module that takes trigger inputs.
I bought a $250 super cheapo drum kit, cut the tom shells in half, installed Piezo's, mesh heads, and 1/4" jacks .. plugged them into my Alesis DMPro and they worked like a charm! Total outlay I probably spent about $400-450 and a couple of days work wiring it all up. They feel as good as (if not better) than my buddy's TD-10 kit!
