Title: File Naming Conventions
Post by: Tacman7 on September 19, 2006, 08:36:16 AM
Is there such a thing here already?

I notice some people have their own.

I can't stream anything so I download everything and it's hard to tell what is what from the names. I guess I could organize folders for every song.

But a naming convention like NickT uses would be nice.

Like

Song Title---Up front Could be shortened

Version Number? ----   with a v

Person uploading ----  short version

Definition-------- What the track is, a mix, a piano, vox, etc.

So If I Tried an lead guitar track for This Airplanes Landing I would post it as:

AirplaneV1TacLead.wmn

or with underscores
Airplane_v1_Tac_Lead.wmn

or combos
Airplane_V1TacLead.wmn

The song is readable then you can dig out the other info if you want it...

I guess the version number might be better last.

Just thinking out loud here...

Great idea.. I was thinking about that myself. Also, I thought that timestamping the attachment files might be helpful when sorting through seps. Other'n that, I can't really think of anything else that would be helpful. Looks like Nick has it covered.

Unless we can all collab with an online version of Protools!  :)

I think the best approach is to incude pertinent information, and try to make it unique to that song and your track ... especially so that when you use the "show all files in this collab" link at the top you can tell one from another.  Nothing worse than 10 variations on the song name ;)

I was going to argue that you don't need the song name since only the pertinant songs are in the thread but I thinks thats what Mark just said.

I'm thinking that it might be important to use the song title in the name for those that download and organize these files. Probably not a big deal for everyone, but for those who can be organizationally challenged (like me), it could be helpful.

Just thought if there were an "Official" naming convention it might be used more.

Just like there is an official bit rate of 128k. I see it used about 25% of the time.

Official = Suggested

I don't know where this would be - in the stuff you read when you sign up?
or If someone started a thread and wanted a naming convention used they could specify what convention they wanted.

I pretty much stick to three types:

Bed tracks I create -

SongName_BPM123_NoVox.wma
SongName_BPM123_NoBass.wma
SongName_BPM123_NoDrums.wma
...

Auditions -

SongName_NickT_GuitarAudition.wma
SongName_NickT_GuitarAudition_Mix.wma
SongName_NickT_BassAudition.wma
SongName_NickT_BassAudition_Mix.wma
...

Seps -

SongName_NickT_Guitar.ape
SongName_NickT_Bass.ape
SongName_NickT_Mix.ape
...

I don't usually have a problem keeping the tracks straight. Don't forget, if a track isn't being used, go up and modify your post and uncheck the attachment. No need to have unused track versions in the master list and thread.

Hope this helps.

Thanks,

Nick
