Title: Gothic Rose Curiosities -Heavy Metal (PVD/Adam/GG/Billy/NickT/Andy/Marcel/Argle)
Post by: AndyG6508 on October 31, 2012, 09:11:55 PM
When three amazing guitarists, an explosive drummer, a full blooded singer and a consummate lyric writer get together on a dark and windy nght.......................................something like this happens!!!!!

Many thanks to Argle for a fantastic mix  8)

Gothic Rose Curiousities (Lyric: Paul Dempsey/Music: Andy Gupta/George Williams 2011/2012)

D dropped tuning,  bpm=90

D figure riff

(v1) (0:27 - )

Over Dfigure

She sits in the dark shadows
Among the curiosities
Her hair as black as the night
Her Raven rests on a skull
Cleaning its feathers
As it readies to take flight

(chorus) (0:48 - )
Gm                             F
Apothecary jars line the walls
                           A
All filled with magic potions
                             Bflat
Designed to enhance emotions
Gm                            F
Tarot cards and crystal balls
                             A
To tell things no one knows
               Bflat   C        Dfigure
No one .... except Gothic Rose

pre-v2 riff (1:09- )

(v2) (1:20 - )
Sad faced harlequins and clowns
Dangle from the ceiling
Hoping for the day they're set free
Devil masks and voodoo dolls
Are scattered all about
Like so much grotesque debris

Chorus (1:39 - )

pre-bridge riff (2:02-  )

(bridge) (2:13 -
Suspended like the spider of gloom
She weaves a gossamer thread
And in the corners of this tomb
She speaks with the living and the dead

Grimoires, spells, books and charms
Anything you can suppose
All that is required
Is a spell with Gothic Rose

Great to hear this complete, it flows great.  A good arrangement and story with GG's excellent narration.

Always a pleasure to be involved, tks.

This is great.  >:D

Always nice to hear you guys rocking out, but this one has the added dimension of Adam's mix which really let's the song shine through.

GG's vocals get better everytime I hear them...I can't believe he was on here for years 'only' playing guitar  :o

Glad you liked the song and the mix!

No, but I liked the Gothic Rose (it was a pattern on some China I had).  I googled it and a site called Gothic Rose Curiosities came up and it sent me in this direction.

Thanks Snowy.

Yes I can see the main riff being too dominating in terms of creating space for a solo. Billy suggested we drop the riff to let him come up with something! And he did..... :D

Fantastic mix - thanks Argle, everyone is on top form here, and you are all great to work with, creating an output to be proud of.

Great song writing and lyrics on this, I love singing some of the lines, I think I sang it a lot more times than strictly necessary during the reocrding process because I enjoyed it so much.  ;D

Every song I work on presents an different challenge, especially as my singing capabilty and understanding develops over time, but I am very happy with my singing on this one in particular. Unusually (those who work with me will understand this) I dont think I could do this better! Andy - you don't know how good it makes me feel by your comparison with Ian Gillan. In my formative years he was my singing hero. Since I took up singing seriously a couple of years back (with your encouragement), I have other heroes also,  my main one being Glenn Hughes.

I just got back in actions from a frustrating hospital visit, and finding this song completed so well on my return has really cheered me up.  :)

Hi George,

Im glad you are happy with the finished result and its specially nice to have cheered you up after your medical misadventure!

I will say it again, your vocals are fantastic on this one. You captured the spirit of the lyric and the music perfectly. Well done indeed!

this wouldn't not have turned out great without the right foundations, your composition, production and bass playing.

After reading Paul's post earlier, I looked up the shop that inspired the song name (and no doubt some of the content). Here it is:

http://gothicroseantiques.com

I have emailed them to say hello, and included a link to the song (http://soundcloud.com/george-williams-8/gothic-rose-curiosities). It'll be interesting so see what they reply.

Well, the lady at trhe shop got back to me, but she isn't very verbose:

Well that was interesting!  Your song did capture the essence of my shop and a bit of my dark life :- If you make a mint with it, please remember me, the Designer of the Dark that inspired you! :-)

Well, George, seems that she didnt object violently to it :).

All we have to do is make a mint o money and retire from the 9 to 5...

I was just glad she didn't hex us.

By the way, I edited the lyrics a fair bit when I sang them:

Gothic Rose Curiousities

She sits in the dark shadows
Among the curiosities
Her hair as black as the night
Her Raven rests on a skull
Cleaning its feathers
As it readies to take flight

(chorus)
Apothecary jars line the walls
All filled with magic potions
Designed to enhance emotions
Tarot cards and crystal balls
To tell things no one knows
No one - except Gothic Rose

Sad faced harlequins and clowns
Dangle from the ceiling
Hoping for the day they're set free
Devil masks and voodoo dolls
Are scattered all about
Like so much grotesque debris

(chorus)

Suspended like the spider of gloom
She weaves a gossamer thread
And in the corners of this tomb
She speaks with the living and the dead

Grimoires, spells, books and charms
Anything you can suppose
But all you need
Is a spell with Gothic Rose

A spell with Gothic Rose

Comment from offsite:

"I really liked this one, it's a little bit heavier than the other tracks I've heard from you in the past.

I could easily imagine Ronnie James Dio doing the vocals!"

So.. I got to thinking Andy compared my vocals to Mr Ian Gillan, so I sent him the song about a month ago, via his management agency, to see if he would be interested in recording it for a solo album or similar.

I wasn't  even expecting a reply, but at least I got a nice email back:

 Dear George,

Thanks for your letter and the song.

It’s really good, but I can’t use it unfortunately.

I have a backlog of material and I’m working on a new batch right now.

Thanks for sending anyway, and good luck.

 Cheers, ig
