Title: mix clinic - song selection
Post by: Cary on December 18, 2006, 10:19:55 AM
Is anyone here interested in doing a mix clinic?

Perhaps someone here can 'donate' 16 or so tracks to a song and we'll all have a run at doing a mix.  It may be educational to discuss all the hows and whys.

If you have a song you think we could use, put up a rough mix.

Brina- put up a link to a rough mix of the proposed song.  Track count is not the issue.  I'm looking for a song which will sound good when properly mixed.

I have 2 really tough mixes. 'One Kiss' & 'Break With Protocol'. Both have at least 16 tracks. They won't be ready until the new year though.  8)

I am up for this. Thanks for suggesting a clinic Cary. I have participated in clinics from various sites and always learn a few things.

Bill is running one at EPS. Like I said...much fun.

Cary I feel we could all benefit from a mix clinic at MCS. I know that some of the gang are trying to get their studio to at least accomplish pro-summer results.

I will help with anything you need.

Thanks!

Nick

Honestly Cary,

what I had in mind I'm not sure would meet the standard of sounding well if mixed right....<<<grin>>>>

you might remember it...

This is the lasted mix I have linked...played with it but decided to give up on it for awhile....

I do have ALL the files.

Great Nick, I think we can all learn more stuff.
As long as a lot of members get involved, we'll have a bunch of different approaches - and that will be very good.  My hope is that nobody feels intimated.  There are no losers in this.

I'm hoping your going to take a stab at this too.  ;)

Ha!  Every board has to have em!

I've ran a few of these about 4 or five years ago and they were extremely insightful.

No doubt! They seem to be beneficial for more than one reason. Aside from the obvious, they help to "refocus" folks. However, as an administrator, I do note, that heavy participation, tends to slow down productivity elsewhere. Not, saying that is a bad thing. Just a noticeable one.
Good luck. With the active membership, it should go over well here.  :)

I would take a stab at it but not for a few weeks now. Christmas & New Years is too close. Time to relax & get drunk !!  :D

This is a great idea.

I haven't had a alot of time lately but I could definately learn by reading and listening to everybody mixes on this subject.

I'm involved in a "mix clinic" at EPS on a cover tune. That's all well & good. I get better at it every time I submit a mix. (Or at least I learn something).

The down side is that I'm currently working with a mix that's already famous.

If you all can come up with an "original" tune that has space for personal interpretation,

I'm in.  8)

Yes, it will be something from here - an original.
I'm glad to hear you're going to take part.   8)

Thanks, but it would be best to have a completed song to work with.  From my understanding, the vocal tracks are missing from Jaden's song.

If I don't hear of anything in the next week, we're probably going to go with Brina's sugestion.  :)

I just wanted to let everyone know that I haven't forgotten about this clinic.  There has been some work going on behind the scenes and we're almost ready to start.

Brina has graciously supplied a song for us to use and I now have the files.  There is a little clean up which I'd like to do before letting them go (one track contained two instruments and I'm hoping I can split them into separates)

I will start a new thread for downloading the files and outlining the playing rules.

Stay tuned.

Hey Cary,

Thanks a lot, I appreciate it , this particular song has been a headache and a half for me, so it'll be interesting and kinda exciting to see what happens and the different takes on it.

I'd like to participate...

Is this something you do with ape files?

I have trouble getting anything off MCS larger than about 4 MB.

I can probably get someone to echo it to my server that works with dial up.

Tac,

Once cary posts the files I have some ftp server space I can upload them to so you can grab them

All are welcome.

I'm going to be putting the files up tonight.  There will be a link to one large RAR file for those who want to do the download in one shot.  That file is about 250 meg.

I will also provide a thread where I'll have all the ape files attached as separates.  That is for those who need to be able to download this song in sections.

This song contains about 28 tracks.

Hi Tac
I'm sorry, but I don't think I'm going to supply low quality wma's or similar type files.  We're looking to improve our skills in this exercise and sound quality is of the upmost importance.

Perhaps if you PM me a mailing address, I can send the wav files to you.

So, is this an educational thing...where we learn how to mix?

Or is this a mixing contest amongst those who already have certain skills?

I'm confused.

How exactly does it work?  everybody doing their own mixes and getting critiques, tips, and suggestions along the way?

I'll have to sit back and watch for a while. 28 tracks is way too many for me to start learning.

[Suggestion Box]

I'd like to propose a future clinic...like Mixing Drums for beginners. What to do, what to use, how to do, why to do. Clinic on adding vox, bass, guitar or whatever next clinic, til we work thru all the parts.

That would help me alot. Maybe that is what you have in mind.

Jeff-
you're doing this dude (i hope)... there is no harm, only gain.
Check the rules thread at the top of this forum.

Clinic:  group instruction session, a teaching session in which an expert in a particular field gives practical instruction and advice to a group.

Ok, I don't claim to be an expert, but I've done quite a few mixes in my day.

I may take a swing at it.

I'm intimidated and realistic about 28 tracks. I know me, I'll bail before I get thru it all.

I'll be watching for sure. :)

Jeff  ;)

You'll be just fine. 28 tracks is nothing to be intimidated about, honestly.

It's just a matter of working with the mix small steps at a time. The more tracks you have, the easier it is to get a better mix as long as the master tracks are well recorded and are "clean". You'll get lots of help - so please have a go. I'm no expert either - but I do look forward to this exercise because it's a great learning learning opportunity where the participants can learn from the "strengths" of their peers.

Once the wav files are available, I'll be downloading them.  :)

250meg rar? You going to put pars too? >:D

No, I wasn't ever wanting lower quality, just on a server that doesn't time out on a dial up connection.

You probably wasn't going to put it on MCS anyway?

Thanks for offering to repost Sternen.

250 mb in pieces could be done on dial up but I don't know.

I'll have to actually go in to the office and download the file.

Oh Woa is me.

Sounds like fun though...

I will be downloading them tonight, and will start the upload just before i go to bed tonight, i will pm you a link to the files in the morning.

Cary -- in the meantime is there a link to a rough mix of the song we will be doing, just so I can start getting my head wrapped around it while the files are downloading?

There is probably a mix of the song somewhere but I recommend you don't go there.  Try to be as open minded as possible regarding instrument level and part selection.  There are so many way to skin a cat.
Have fun!

I should be able to get the big rar with the dsl at this office I do some work at occasionally. Think it would be too much for dial up.
Thanks Sternen.

So we need to have this done by July?

We have very patient clients?
