Title: Greek Tragedy
Post by: rightonthemark on November 25, 2015, 11:18:38 AM
this one started out as some music i've had for quite a while and needed lyrics for it.
i contacted Johnny to write something involving the greek gods and the economic issues going on in greece today.
i think he came up with a colorful story.
after things got going and a few changes Era came in with some killer bass and then CrossEyedHenry nailed it on drums.
other than wishing i was a better singer i think it came out pretty good.
well, it was fun & great to work with these fantastic collaborators.

Greek Tragedy

 (Prologue)
Gather round ye children...a great drama yet unfolds
As Mortals by their millions struggle with Gods of old

I hear Old Cronus laughing, so where do we begin
For the Gods are everlasting...but mortal life must end

 (vs)
Mortals take your seats in the arena
as Dionysus dances with Athena
the drunken fool's all dope & grope
& Zeus is throwing lightning bolts

Hades comes up to Mount Olympus
Athenas' drunk & she plays the temptress
Mortals gasp as they watch her Un-dressed
 Dionysus & his latest conquests

 (ch)
 Too much want...Too much greed
Mortals take more than they ever need
Pandora slams the lid on Hope
& the Gods appear to help us cope...

 (vs)
 Apollo rides over cloudy skies
Over mortal men who are doomed to die
Don't look now, he'll burn your eyes
The privilege here is to feel alive

Mortals cling to a knotted rope
Feet on the edge of a slippery slope
 Placing their faith in isotopes
for the power of Zeus's lightning bolts

 (ch)
Too much want Too much greed
Mortals take more than they ever need
Pandora slams the lid on Hope
& the Gods appear to help us cope...

 (bridge)
 Sadly we know the ending
Of every great tale must come
 Gods are only ever condescending
 To we poor Mortal scum

lyrics - John Williams
bass - Era
drums - Steve Collins
guitar, vocals, mix - Mark Shrider

thanks everyone for your participation and input.

Hi Mark,

An atmospheric rock song. Very effective, I like the dynamics of this.

Great performances all around, specially vocals and guitars.

And the bass has a lovely tone to it. I wish I could get a sound like that :).

thanks Andy.
the more i listen to it the more comfortable i'm getting with my vocals.
but i guess because it didn't come out as i heard it in my head i'm a little more critical of it (mainly on the first half of each verse - i like the other parts).
this is one where the rhythm guitar is something i had been playing for quite a while and couldn't wait to work it into a song.
the leads i tried working out stuff but nothing ever worked until i just hit record & let it rip on the fly without thinking about it.
on that bass tone...
Era gave me a wet track & a dry track.
i did a little treatment to the dry track & mixed it with Era's wet track & grouped them into a buss with a little compression & that was it.
big & fat with a little throaty cut thru mid range in there.
and i do like the atmospheric synth stuff to compliment 80s style power metal/prog metal/hair metal/etc...
glad you like it as well.

Thanks sir Andy :) it was fun! I mean Mark's rhythm gtr sound pretty simple but It is not. I really had to play quite a few extra rounds just to get it. In the end it is live take and I corrected couple of bad notes..

Mark. I do exactly the same sometimes. i record both DI and the speaker and mix/alter them to a buss :) beefy, man :) nice job!!
