Title: Defraggler
Post by: CosmicDolphin on January 26, 2009, 06:43:46 AM
Just a quick tip

My hard driver meter kept maxing out on the song I'm mixing at the moment...which means the audio stops...very annoying when you can only listen to about 5 seconds of audio at a time.

Anyway I figured a de-frag may and loads of people reccomended a little program called Defraggler over the windows defrag.

http://www.defraggler.com/

Well I ran it and it sure is quicker than the free one with windows....still takes a long while though on a big drive.  The good news is the hard-drive meter in Sonar is now registering 50-70% instead of 70-100% and the song runs happily all the way through now without stopping ( It's 32 audio tracks BTW on a 7200 sata drive which is 2 thirds full )

'Come on Gerk sing it for us.  I'm still waiting to hear your voice.  It must be on this site somewhere, but where, oh where is it?  I can't remember how the Fraggle song goes...I might have to google it  ;D ;D.  Then it'll be stuck in my head all day...better not!!!  I may end up writing a lyric to that tune  :D

My voice is not on this site.  It is on the Testafied Records site (I'll give you a hint, it's not singing).  :D

I'm up for it if jeff is.  Depends if I get inspired to write copy for one again :)  Way more work for jeff than me, voiceover is not that hard ...

CD,

What I had been reading for years about defragmenting drives is that you don't do it for your DAW's audio drive(s).  Supposedly defragmenting is supposed to help the drive read single files, but with multitrack recording, the drive is jumping all over the place to read multiple tracks.  And defragging can make it worse by potentially moving tracks in the same project further apart.

But it did work for you so it makes me wonder.

I think it's kind of a crapshoot as to whether your tracks get moved far apart or not when you defrag.  If you're drive's very fragmented I would think that at least have each track as a contiguous file would be a good thing though.

Then again you should be running at least 2 drives. One for programs & operating files and the other for data. The only drive I would defrag is my operating drive. All my song files are saved to another drive which never needs defraging.

I am running nine drives on my system. Thats not including the 80 and 160 2.5 inch portables! a 250 gb drive is about $50.

And I'm poor!

Hey The Gerkinator  ;D ;D

Thanks for the nickname.  You sound so "not like I pictured"  ;D ;D.  I'm guessing your singing voice should sound pretty good by that spoken word piece you did.  I expected your voice to be deeper and gruffer  ;D ;D
