Title: Professional Virgin
Post by: Studioplayer on January 31, 2009, 02:27:43 PM
I may be biased but I think this song came out beautifully.   8)  I have to thank everyone for their patience on completing this. It took awhile but finding a steel player (thanks Jim) plus holidays etc. it just took a little longer than normal. Worth the wait though.  :) James did a fantastic job on the vocals and everyone did some really nice playing on this. GREAT stuff guys & gal!! One of my favourites for sure.

Dave

(Mastered version by CD on page 3 and below) Sounds great. Thanks bro!!  8)

Professional Virgin

(v1)
At thirteen she played in her mama's high heels
Giggled in the mirror at the woman revealed
Wore her old dresses, toyed with her beads
Didn't know then about some men's needs
Had girlish hopes about how love would feel

(v2)
She was fifteen when she came to the city
Man on the bus said 'Girl, ain't you pretty!'
A list of dreams was all she had
Didn't know then things were going to get bad
Man was named Johnny, seemed kind and witty

Chorus
Professional virgin in tired white lace
Faint trace of make-up on a little-girl face
Young eyes getting old as they scan the street
Heart turning bitter that used to be sweet

(v3)
Shy fifteen, she was sweeter than honey
Didn't know a thing about making money
Body of a nymph, heart full of trust
She'd never heard of a sin called lust
Learned real quick from that devil Johnny

(v4)
She's eighteen now and the dream list is gone
Johnny's left too, he grabbed the money and run
Others took his place, with the same old plan
Each one a 'daddy' but not a man
Not even a friend, so she's got no one

Bridge
Getting out of here as soon as she can, never should've left her mama alone
Leaving these heartless streets behind, still feels like a child, she wants to go home

Chorus
Professional virgin in tired white lace
Faint trace of make-up on a little-girl face
Young eyes getting old as they scan the street
Heart turning bitter that used to be sweet

Thanks Nick. That would be me that did the mixing. Just added it to the credits. Not sure if that was wise.  ;D

Hasn't been mastered yet.  ;)

Hey Dave,
Thank you for mixing this one, it came out great!  Good job with the steel too  8>  Did you wind up using the drum seps or just the stereo mix?

A real masterpiece Dave...been keeping tabs on this one for a while..the pedal steel absolutely sends it to a different level (man, I really need to get one of those things...next toy! ;D), with the piano and keys rolling along with it..it's so haunting with the lyrics as well...a real classic. It's also such an explosive format here in North America....hit the the rock and country stations simultaneously...double whammy! ;D ;D Can't wait to get the album..2 thumbs up everyone :)

Thanks everyone. I think the song came out nicely. I would love to have a pedal steel too Marc but I hear they're not easy to play. Sure wouldn't mind trying though.

Marc informed me that the song title says "Heaven'. Whoops  :-[ I'll fix that. That's what happens when your working on more songs than one.  ;D

Hey Dave, just found this posted here.  Man I have been so busy lately haven't had time to pop on the site too much.
Song turned out great and I really enjoyed leaving my comfort zone of my more traditional style of Country singing.  Took a bit to get my head around the tone of my voice and such.
Great job to all involved and thanks to all for comments on the vocals.

I really do need to hang out at this site more ;).

James.

Great tune guys,
I'm not big country music fan, but this sounds better than most of the stuff I hear droning out of the speakers at the local hardware store.

I love a good ballad, and this one hits every mark, but why is "Johnny" always the devil in disguise in these things ;D
O yeah, I remember now.... ;)

How do you master a track? I wanna learn. Whats the diff with mastering and mixing?

Mixing is collecting all the separate tracks and blending them into a cohesive song....

Mastering is taking a song that has been mixed , and using various tools too make it sound better.  In the old days it was to make sure nothing caused the needle to jump out it's groove on a record. It's also about making a collection of album tracks sound like they belong together tonallly and volume-wise. Lately it's been about making things sound bigger & louder often at the expense of sound quality.  Personally I blame people listening to music on tiny crappy speakers in phones etc. where the music is inaudible unless it's been highly compresed & limited. It's also about spacing tracks , sequencing the album etc.

How do you master a track ?   Read everything you can , I suggest a book by Bob Katz called 'Mastering Audio' which has everything you'd probably ever need to know and more.

Yep, gotta watch out for those Johnny's  ;D

Nice comments Donna. I have Jame Ryce's album and it's quite good. Listen to it often. He has a fantastic voice.  8)

MARK!! That mastered version sounds FANTASTIC!!!  8) Great job on it buddy. I really wish we could still get that album out somehow. At least get it up to CD Baby. So much work has been done on it especially all the mastering work. It would be a shame to not have it on CD somewhere.  :(

And thanks for resurrecting this one. It reminds me that some fine music is being made here and I really gotta get back on the musical horse and starting riding again. My studio is done so no reason to not get going again.  :)

Love this tune.  :)
