Title: Waves NLS
Post by: CosmicDolphin on June 30, 2012, 01:28:22 PM
Just got hold of waves NLS ( Non - Linear Summing ) plugin.

I was re-mixing a 15 yr old 8 track recording as the original got damaged & i was asked if I still had a copy - not the tightest band I ever recorded ...drums had already been bounced down to stereo but thought I would throw on the new NLS Plugin.

There's not  a huge amount of plugins / mixing going on but here's the final unmastered versions....one as it was...and one with NLS added to every channel & the master version on the 2 buss.

See what you think...

( BTW ..There's almost a minute of silence at the start...no Wavelab on the new system yet  ::)  )

A little more depth but....it is louder. It sounds like more EQ was added more than anything else.

There's a 'Drive' knob but I didn't use it on this.

I've found another plugin....wayyyy...cheaper...that I think does a better job than the Waves NLS

It's called Stripbus

http://www.sknote.it/StripBus.htm

Quite a few folks on Gearslutz recomended it, so I got it and slapped it on the 2buss of a mix I'm doing...and hey presto it seemed to glue it together in a way I couldn't get with NLS, and I'd also messed around 'The Glue' , a few of the emulations in my liquidmix and some of the other Waves modelled CLA compressors.

Stripbus just seemed to make it sound better in a way the others didn't.  Took away some of the harsh edges and made it sound more 'together'

Worth a shot for the $$$

As for the glue on the master buss, I use this one... the dry/wet button gives you that sweet and soft paralell compression

I find it's very song dependant as to what can sound good on the 2buss...some songs go perfect ...others get turned to shit ! with the same compressor.
