Title: Nothing Ever Changes (Rock)
Post by: stoman on September 26, 2009, 02:37:05 PM
This song has taken one year from the first draft to the final mix, and it has changed quite remarkably from a slow three track idea to a full-grown rock song with more than 40 tracks.

Thanks to all participants for your hard work and patience.

Lyrics: Katherine Wong (Casia)
Vocals: Mark Lee Fletcher (Detune)
Guitars: Andrew Doherty (Docca3)
Bass: Marc Traynor (Canuk62)
Drums: Gerald Langenfeld (Jman)
Composed & arranged by Steffen Offermann

Mix 1 by Adam Kirby (Argle)
Mix 2 by Steffen Offermann (Stoman)

I will post FLAC versions of both mixes next. If anybody needs a different format, drop me a line!

Updated version of my mix: Nothing Ever Changes - mixed by Stoman (http://stoman.org/download/Mark_Lee_Fletcher_Nothing_Ever_Changes.mp3).

Neal and Marc will mix the song too. I can't wait to hear their results ... :)

Regards,
  Steffen

Great vocals Mark!!!

Usually I don't really notice differences in mixes, but this one I did.  :)

Argle's mix seemed more powerful to me, and Stoman's seemed a little darker and scarier? But both are great!

Great vocals, Mark.  :)
Indeed, well done all round.  ;)

(Would be good to have the lyrics up.  ;) )

This is really quite superb, lots of changes, a musical mystery ride... intriguing song, which kept me listening to the end to see where it went next...

well done everyone...

Thanks, Ladies! :)

Tricia, you are right: Argle's mix is "louder" and thus more modern-style (its dynamic range is about 8 dB, while mine is 11 dB).

We may get yet another mix ... :)

I will leave the seps on my website for another week or two, so anybody who'd like to try his own handwriting on it is welcome.

Donna, I don't know if I have the latest version of the lyrics. I'll write it down unless somebody can post it for me (Casia?).

Regards,
  Steffen

Another excellent tune with a great cast of musicians.  I am proud to have been included.
I love both mixes. It just shows how different the feel of a song can be simply by different emphasis in mixing. Love the power and clarity of Adam's mix, and I love that Dark, Bassy feel of Steffen's mix.... glad we have both.

Steffen, I think you should add to the credit list though... your keys (and strings) play a very "key" part in this tune.

Thanks for the kind words folks.  This song had some very humble beginnings but just listen to it now!  Plenty of talent on display here.

Wow!  Both mixes are great, this turned out really well.  Thank you everyone.....I've been waiting for this song - it's my Leonard Cohen lyric.  I wrote it after reading "Beautiful Losers"  :D

Here's the final lyric:

Nothing Ever Changes

Verse 1:
I will lie beside you, like I would lie in death
And when my eyes are closed, is it just another test
Of the hand that rocks the cradle and the baby who would fall
For when I get to heaven, there is nothing there at all

Verse 2:
Sitting in my corner I will contemplate my life
Thinking of tomorrow as I'm pulling out my knife
To cut away the demons running through my head
For when my eyes are open I find I'm still in bed

   Chorus:
Nothing ever changes... nothing ever does
   Nothing
   Nothing
   Nothing ever, ever changes

Verse 3:
When you're lying at my feet looking up at me
I will barely remember how we came to be
For love is nothing more than a blur of space and time
And my wicked heart will not forsake its crime

    (chorus)

Bridge:
I light a cigarette to get me through the day
And as the ashes burn they melt my words away
For I've become a sinner with a naked soul
All my words unspoken have nowhere left to go

   (Chorus)
   (Instrumental)
   (chorus)

Verse 4: (NOT USED - TOO LONG)
As the morning passess, I slowly walk away
My mind tell's me it's over; I have nothing left to say
The darkness of the day has forgotten that it's blue
And when I'm all alone will I ever think of you

Good one guys....nice track - something a little different , had a good listen to both mixes , and whilst there's nothing wrong with the other one I have to give it to Adam for punch clarity and depth.  :)

Wow guys - this is an intricate arrangement musically - and you pulled it off!!!

Great vox Mark!

Great playing by the band

Andy - super guitar, love the harmony solos, Marc- you're the man as always on that bass, Jman - nice controlled punchy drumming...

Steffen - hats off to you on executing a very complex arrangement with finesse and grace, and Argle - great mix/master.

Well done!
Andy

Have to agree that Andy's triple guitar harmony is the highlight of the song.

very kind of you to say so Mark, but there are so many highlights in here. That soulful, pained voice just drew me into this song in the first place ... wonderfully atmospheric and full of anguish .... brilliant :)

My sentiments exactly...heard the first 3 words on this and said to myself "Gotta play on this one!" ;D One of those rare occasions where the song sounds tailor made for the voice, perfect fit....gonna be one of the jewels for 2009 MCS for certain! :)

I had a blast mixing this.  It's a really great song, densely layered and varied.
