Chicken of Depression Blues
My woman's been cheatin' on me, I'm settin' up here on the shelf
Oh yeah, my woman's been cheatin' on me, I'm settin' up here on the shelf
But my baby don't have another man, she's cheatin' on me with herself
Come home early one night, before the bars was all closed down
Oh yeah, I come home early one night, before the bars was all closed down
Thought I'd do right by my little woman, take her out on the town
Ain't no bluebird of happiness singin' on my street
Oh no, ain't no bluebird of happiness singin' on my street
Not since the chicken of depression started peckin' at my feet
Heard commotion in the bedroom, tiptoed by to have a look
Mmmm hmmm, I heard commotion in the bedroom, tiptoed by to have a look
My baby was in our rockin' chair, but she wasn''t readin' no book
Now I'm sleepin' on the sofa, while my baby's rockin' all night long
Yeah, I'm sleepin' on the sofa, while my baby's rockin' all night long
Says she's got emancipation, now she's doing right what I done wrong
Since my baby started cheatin', ain't no bluebird singin' on my street
No, since my baby started cheatin', ain't no bluebird singin' on my street
Not since the chicken of depression started peckin' at my feet

Rebecca, Paul, and Marc, thanks for checking it out. Glad you like it! ;)
The trio did a sensational job, and the piece is eliciting a lot of smiles and positive comments around the place. The production has been praised to the skies.

This sounds cool. I love the blues....not crazy about the meaning of the lyrics... ::)...but it was well written and well performed . 8)

nothin wrong with the lyrics that I see.. an interesting twist on the blues, not sure I've heard this covered before ;D ;D
-
Jay, I loved having you on board as well. ;) The keys were superb, and in all the right places. ;D There'll definitely be more fun ones coming along. ;)
Tricia, good of you to have a listen, and thanks for your kind comments about the writing and production. ;) (I respect your feelings about the theme. ;) )
Jay, when I set out to write the lyric (my first blues attempt), I wanted to get away from the usual "cheatin' " theme, and to give things a bit of a humorous twist in which no one really gets hurt (well, maybe the man's pride a little).
I wanted the woman - who starts out as "my little woman" (implying being submissive and taken for granted) to become self-sustaining and independent. Clearly she was able to learn how to do so during her man's many absences (when he was in the bars). ;D And you're right: I doubt the song's theme has been covered before. ;D

Gotta find someone who has a good camcorder with good audio... some of the improv stuff we pump out would BLOW you away man... I Know I've wished MANY times that there was a recorder running in the back of the room... even if it was an old reel-to-reel... or cassette deck... some of this stuff can never be reproduced... lol
Open jams are a blast!
-
haha - sweet ...love the lyrics ;D

Donna,.... love that lyric. Totally my style!! ;) >:D
Giving a twist like that to Blues makes me want more blues.
I've played with many great blues musicians so no offence blue's guys,..but I find listening to blues can sometimes make me feel like I'm listening to country. Formula remains that same.
Blues needs twists (like this lyric) to make it interesting to me.
Great job everyone

Jay and Paulo, I'm pleased you enjoyed the lyric. It was a lot of fun to write. ;)
Holger, yes, one can never have enough blues songs. ;) I've listened to this at least 60 times since its "birth" here a few months ago, and I still get a kick out of it. ;) The guys did a brilliant job.
