Title: Mary Ann - Stonehinged Track 7
Post by: Stoney on November 30, 2009, 11:08:43 AM
Well this is track 7 for the album.... This is a dark tale with lyrics from Cas and music from Billy....Andy has provided a lovely fluid bass part and Jay's keys are terrific with B3, Piano and moog parts working their magic throughout.

Guitars/Intro synth/Music -Billy Playle
Lyrics - Casia
Bass - Andy Gupta
Keys - Jay Schankman
Drums/FX/Vocal/Production - Ian Burrage

Mary Ann
By Casia

(V1)
Through the darkness of the city
Mary Ann wanders
Trying to escape
From her demon lover
And she sees behind each door
In every window reflection
There's another sad tale
Borne from love's rejection

(Chorus)
Oh, Mary Ann stands on the side of the road
Where there's nothing to embrace
But the drifting of the shadows
And a glass full of disgrace

(V2)
Every lost soul
Who doesn't have a home
Follows in the dark
Searching for their bones
And every coward that she sees
Is staring right through her
Cause they can't believe
That they have all been cursed

(Chorus)
Oh, Mary Ann stands on the side of the road
Where there's nothing to embrace
But the drifting of the shadows
And a glass full of disgrace

(V3)
A hand upon her shoulder
Gives an awful fright
As she turns around to find
That it was only her mind
And all those bitter grapes
That were poured into wine
Have drunken her spirit
And left her standing blind

(Bridge/Outro)
On the side of the road
Mary Ann waits
For her demon lover
Cause there's no hope for her soul
And she would rather be with him
Than be alone
She'd rather be with him
Than be alone

Here are some outside comments for Mary Ann:

1)  Fantastic, catchy rocker and fine power vocals... a bit Midnight Oil touch. Perfect thing - and I love spooky lyrics, yeah. On my fave list. Deserves worldwide airplay. Poor MaryAnn.
Pascal

2)  Nice tune. Really well written and performed...KOR

3)  Full of hooks and melody all the way through. Love your vocals, just a really pleasent voice and great performances. Great stuff! Cheers!!

4)  Catchy number, right off I like the positive upbeat vibe. Mary Ann on the side of the road... quite a story about her! Nice writing and performance! Congratz! :) .  At the risk of repeating myself, lol...as I also posted this in your blog. ;)

Later...Casia

Cas,

Nice to read the reviews.

Quite a solid performance from the band - even though I say it myself :).

I think these set of lyrics are amongst the strongest you have written. Lovely imagery!

Cheers

Thanks Andy.  I guess I have a big task ahead of me.  I love metaphors, but I started changing my writing to fit in everyday language as that's more commercial!!!!!  It was a very difficult task for me and took me a long time to change - are you saying I should go back  :o.  I think "Nothing Ever Changes" with Steffen and Detune fit into this metaphoric lyric writing category  :D.

Casia, you have outdone those lyrics with this one.  One of your best!

The band is in top form here!  Fantastic vocals Ian.

Another outside comment:

Mary Ann is catchy and has an energy that drives it along almost like it's being pulled forward by the lyrics.  Chorus and versus are really cool.  And I really like the guitar work throughout.  Very nice work.  I would have expected no less from the great Casia.  I'm going through your wonderful player now.

Peace .... Richard
