Here's another finished collaboration. Everybody did a fantastic job of turning my idea into a finished product! They really captured what I had in my head of what this should sound like. Thanks to everyone that contributed! Below are the lyrics and list of collaborators.
Down On Our Knees
(c) 2010 Roger Wilkerson
v1
wandering around wondering why
pretty disturbed but we get by
sometimes life is like an open book
sometimes a train wreck is worth a look
off of the rails is a matter of fact
that's how it goes when you're on the wrong track
falling over is not getting us down
still going through life wearing a crown
c1
don't care what you believe
you don't like it you can get up and leave
leave it alone and leave us be
down on our luck and down on our knees
v2
It's over now, but it's never done
everybody's hurt and nobody won
took too damn long to get this far
too many bottles and too many bars
we got each other and we had enough
given it away and given it up
it's all good, but you don't have a clue
be better off if it happened to you
c2
don't care what you believe
you don't like it you can get up and leave
leave it alone and leave us be
down on our luck and down with disease
bridge
something is better than nothing
had enough pushing and shoving
we got to go and we got to go on
no matter how far no matter how long
c2
don't care what you believe
you don't like it you can get up and leave
leave it alone and leave us be
down on our luck and down on our knees

Thank you Paulo! You did a great job :)

I made a folder on my desktop where I put all the songs from MCS that will go on my MP3 stick and/or on the next CD for my car. This song is one of those! :)

Awesome Steffen! Glad you liked it :)

Great rootsy melodic soul tune. Vocals, instrumentation and mix sound great. I never usually critique on a finished thread but the one thing that stands out to my ears is the kick groove doesn't seem to line up with the bass groove. Maybe it's just me or it was intentional. Just something I noticed.
-
Thanks Jay :) I know there is one spot we looked at towards the beginning where there seemed to be a misplaced kick, but other than that, I think it's just the way it was played.
Roger
-
Guys... I don't think the mix is good... Now that I'm listening louder, sometimes I listen to a click like the tempo click along the song... Am i dreaming or???
-
I think your mix is good. What spots do you hear the click?
-
Hey Paulo. I just listened to this on my iPod. I didn't hear the click, but I do the think the drums are off like Jay mentioned. I'll PM Ken and see if he agrees. We might just have them misaligned or something.
Roger
-
I didn't relisten about the click but the kick drum is not aligned, that I know... The problem is that is out only in some spots.
-
What I hear is the bass is doing a standard country groove in the verses like so:
(highlighted are the beats being played)
1, and, 2, and, 3, and, 4, and,
If the kick locked in with that,.. it would be fine. The chorus sounds fine.
Again just my opinion. I don't know shit most of the time. ;)
-
HDA hit it dead on .
I just opened up the program to listen to what I played to and it's not even close to the bass that's on the finished track ( not that's it a bad take ,it just doesn't follow the kick ). There were also a few kicks that were not dead on also .
If you would like , post the latest bass sep and I can retrack tomorrow to it . I know were in the finished thread but you guys spent alot of time on this and I would hate to see you settle for something your not 100% happy with .
Let me know
Ken

Good song and a good mix , but now Paulo has the bass more audible than the earlier mixes he asked me to listen to you can really tell it's not locked to the drums. You could spend a night splicing the bass to line up with the kick , I've done it quite a few times...or retrack the bass.

Ken,
Watchout out the original thread, I'll be posting there a drumless track for you to retrack.
Much thanks.
-
It's there now, Ken.
-
Yeah, that would be great Ken. I do think we should retrack it. I hate it's something that we didn't realize until now, but I think it's a decent song and would be worth it to get it right. Thanks guys :)

Perhaps I'm just out of the pocket, I know that Ken's in sync. (in Time)
As I get older, it seems that I have more trouble staying in the groove. That sucks for me, it was never a question before. :-\
Well, you get what you pay for....LOL
Preston 8)
-
Neither of you are wrong with what you played,.. just completely different grooves. Bass is doing a country groove in the verses and drums are doing a push kick groove.
Once Ken re-tracks to the bass groove,... it will be just a matter of shifting a few things to tighten it right up.
Looking forward to hearing this completed,..again. ;) :)
-
Attached is an updated mix for this one with Preston's new bass. It's tight with the kick now. Thanks again guys. Had not listened to this in a while. You guys played great!
Roger
-
Sorry meant to say it's attached on first post. You will find it there :)
-
I've been listening to (and using) the wrong version of this for years. Never noticed the update until today. The "new" version rocks! 8)
