Title: The Rats (death-metal) (FAWM song) Peter & Donna
Post by: Donna on March 05, 2010, 09:31:20 AM
Well. Where can I begin.  ::)  I blame this one on Richard Dawkins and the chapter on rodents in his amazing book "The Ancestor's Tale: A Pilgrimage to the Dawn of Evolution". Dawkins speculates that there's a greater possibility of humans becoming extinct and rats surviving than the other way around. That got me thinking... >:D

Music/Instr./Vocals...err...growling & shouting: Peter Watkinson
Lyrics: Donna Devine

The Rats

(v1)
65 million years for us
To come into our own
65 million years to wait
Before our time had come
Finally Armageddon
When some fool hit the red
Leaving us in freedom
With the human species dead

Chorus
Arsenic Ratsac Warfarin
We survived them all
At last the earth
Belongs to us
Oh, how the mighty fall
Wretched humans
Pale and weak
Outshouted by
A rodent squeak

(v2)
Every ship you sailed on
To build your lives anew
We travelled with the cargo
And journeyed there with you
We crouched along a gangplank
Or scurried up wet ropes
We were the shadow side
Of all of your dreams and hopes

Chorus
Arsenic Ratsac Warfarin
We survived them all
At last the earth
Belongs to us
Oh, how the mighty fall
Wretched humans
Pale and weak
Outshouted by
A rodent squeak

Bridge
We gave you gifts of malice
Like typhus and the plague
But you were your worst enemy
Now see the choice you made

(v3)
Since the dust has settled
And nuclear winter's past
We've gnawed our way through
Tokyo, Toronto and Belfast
Had gastronomic pleasure
In London and New York
Dined on human corpses
That tasted just like pork

Chorus
Arsenic Ratsac Warfarin
We survived them all
At last the earth
Belongs to us
Oh, how the mighty fall
Wretched humans
Pale and weak
Outshouted by
A rodent squeak

Outro
We're no longer lean
But we're still mean
A gnawing machine

*Sound of rats squeaking, soft at first and then louder, more aggressive

Blimey Donna

I love the lyrics and the rats at the end....I like heavy but to be honest that is a little heavier than I can handle but all power to you for heading off into all genres...I'm sure the DM guys will love it.

Well done

Ian

Yes, Rat's and Cockroaches ......nice!

Just a few facts - an adult pair of rattus norvegicus (brown rat) can produce around 200 baby rats a year who in turn can produce 200 baby rats a year (you do the maths.) In London you are never more than 10 ft away from a rat. I used to work (albeit briefly) for a small pest control unit in London and we were always busy. Check out Pearl Jam's song also called Rats.

A nice little chiller from you two. I love hearing something like this every once in a while. Keeps things interesting.

Yeh, it sounds like it should... Drums are weldone for the genre... All in all it's as good as the ones that I ear in the radio.

I enjoyed this much more than I expected.  It's more interesting than most death metal because it has quite a bit of melodic singing.  Also more of a classic sound, circa 80's.  Nice production and great lyrics, Donna.

So Donna ... when I first saw your photo-Avatar I thought ... oh yeah, Death Metal ..... not! LOL. I love it! My son plays this stuff. I feel like I should rush in with a fire extinguisher sometimes and douse his fingers.

Great job :)

Thought I'd give this another listen as it's so good.

I know it's not everyone's cup of tea, but I can't help thinking that some people don't appreciate how good this really is. We are creatures of habit but it's good for the senses to tap into genres we don't normally have an affinity with. Personally, it always has a positive effect and one that improves my own song-writing skills.

The tones in this song (both musically and lyrically) are a perfect match. I love the way the singer has assumed the role of the rat and taunting us humans especially in the chorus.......brilliant!

Leave your comfort zone and give this a listen.

Billy.

I'm not a Death Metal fan but having said that, IMO this is as a good as I've heard (Son no. 2 played Slipknot et al EVERYTIME we went somewhere in the car for 2 years).
Well done, troops.

Lovely to see this one re-surface.  :)

Thank you all for your kind comments. I'll certainly pass them on to Peter Watkinson, my collaborator.  ;)

I love it Donna... of course the music would have 90% of us looking to push that red button if we had to listen to death metal all day. :o >:D

I thought it would be cool to have the music for the verses be so utterly light and fluffy that it just blows you away when the chorus of death metal rattles your brains... kind of like mixing Mary Poppins with Godzilla!!!!!
