I started writing this song for Marc in January but I wanted to make sure I was saying the right thing. I change it several times. It was sad, it was happy, it was silly. I wanted to share it with him and let him know we were all pulling for him. Finally, a couple of days ago after the horrible news, I decided to just go with the very first thing that came out of my head, my original. Ray put some music together for me and now I'm sharing it with everyone here. I did an Acapello for Ray and was surprised that he left my singing in the outro as we all know I can't sing...but here it is.
A Friend of Mine
Casia - lyrics
Ray - music and vocal
(V1)
If you get there
Before I do
Set up a place in paradise
And we'll sing away our blues
(Prechorus)
Cause you're a friend of mine
The "baddest" of them all
No one plays quite like you do
Or knows how to take a fall
(Chorus)
Every conversation
Every time you made me laugh
Will never be forgotten
Cause some things - oh, they just last
Like fools gold
And Saran wrap
Like memories
And all your neighbor's crap
Tinsel from under the tree
And the smell of blue cheese
Ooooo, oooooo
(V2)
So I picture you
Standing at the gate
The gatekeeper
May be your fate
But with that key
You can let us all in
We'll party forever
That's how we're gonna win
That's how we're gonna win
Gonna win, gonna win, yeah!
solo
So I picture you
Standing at the gate
The gatekeeper
May be your fate
But with that key
You can let us all in
We'll party forever
That's how we're gonna win
That's how we're gonna win
Gonna win, gonna win, yeah!
(Bridge)
And all us old rockers
Well, we'll have a ball
There'll be no price to pay
And with our wings
We'll never fall
(1/2 Chorus)
Like fools gold
And Saran wrap
Like memories
And all your neighbor's crap
Tinsel from under the tree
And the smell of blue cheese
(Outro)
You're a friend of mine
I hate to see you go
But if there's a paradise
Put my name on hold
And I'll see you
Standing at the top
On the golden stage
Cause you don't know how to stop
Oh, you're a friend of mine
That'll never change
And I thank you
For each and every day
You're a friend
You're a friend of mine
You're a friend of mine

great music and lyrics! The music reminds me of Genesis in their early years. Well done!
Casia, your voice fits perfectly here.
I'm sure that would make Marc smile.
Thank you both for this song!

Very nice song Casia... Who played all those keys? I love the synth solo, just the way I like :)
Nice tribute to Marc, He's gotts be tapping his toe, wherever he's now.

Hi Cass and Ray,
A nice tribute, and I think Marc would have liked the "against the grain" bright feel the song generates.
Very good singing and instrumentation.
Cass you sung well, with a little more confidence you should start belting out vocals.

:'( Ok guys. I gotta stop crying now. Very nice Casia & Ray. GOOD call on keeping Casia's voice in there. It sounds perfectly fine and it's very fitting and personal that way. It sounds GREAT really. NICE TUNE !!! I think Marc would have dug it. 8) 8)

Wonderful tribute guys.
Dramatic to the nth degree.
Great lyric Casia and that in league with Ray's genius (something I have always thought about you Ray) and the outcome could be nothing less than magical.
I cried when your voice came in Casia, it is clearly so haunting and hearfelt.
What does our bro Marc think......I am sure 10/10 and an exceed marking :) :)

Nice production Ray with shades of Peter Gabriel in there.
Casia - Anyone who listens to this will be surely touched by it's lyrical content. It sure touched my soul.
Billy.

I love this ! It has elements of Peter Gabriel (the vocals), Styx (the synth solo), Genesis (the rhythm), and Lynyrd Skynyrd (the guitar) and merges them all in an awesome way. Marc would have loved it too for sure!
Nice to hear your voice, Casia! :)

Steffen

You gotta be proud of that man... Very cool solo and all the other keys are just fine. Damn, I thought you were a guitar player and singer :D

Geez, Ray, you are reaching new levels with your creativity, musicianship, arranging, etc!! Great stuff!
We have a new vocalist on site!! Casia!!! Woo hoo!

Don't get me started Paul or you may all regret it. I'm afraid everyone would end up leaving and I'd be on MCS all by myself ;D ;D, with my memories!!
Actually, CD might stay :D :D
