Eva Gabor, one of the famous sisters, is quoted as once having said "Throughout history, all a girl has ever needed is simple velvet and basic diamonds." Tongue in cheek or not, it was a notion impossible to resist doing something with. I hope y'all enjoy it. ;)
Music/melody/arrangement/instrumentation: Billy Playle
Vocals: Anne Cozean
Lyrics: Donna Devine
Simple Velvet and Basic Diamonds
(v1)
I love to bathe in honeyed milk
It turns my skin to glowing silk
It was good for Cleopatra
It's good enough for me
(v2)
Another thing that makes me purr
Is being draped in fancy fur
I'm stylish to the limit
As anyone can see
But...
Chorus
With simple velvet and basic diamonds
A girl needs little more
Well maybe an emerald or two
When the wolf creeps round the door
Bridge
All I know of physics
Is that bodies collide
Astronomy is more about
The stars in my eyes
Arithmetic? It doesn't count
And history's full of lies
Geology's not rhinestones
But fine stones
(v3)
White linen trimmed with Belgian lace
I know is to some women's taste
But I'm uncomplicated
And not difficult to please
(v4)
Though I might flirt with pale chiffon
I've other things to focus on
To keep me well and balanced
There's nothing's quite like these
Oh...
Chorus
With simple velvet and basic diamonds
A girl needs little more
Well maybe an emerald or two
When the wolf creeps round the door
Repeat chorus

Wow - what a slick song!!
Artful lyrics, cool vocals rounded off by Mr.Versatile's super arrangement and production.
Enjoyed the listen - martini anyone?

Donna the Lyric is, well...OK...I'll just say it Devine!
This captures the "big band" era spot on. Billy's, music arrangement, Ms. Cozean's vocal were perfect to these humble ears...
I just need a tux and tall drink, and some "old school class" wouldn't hurt either! ;D

Ooops! Sorry to be late thanking you, Paul, Andy, and Johnny. :)
I too love the atmosphere that Billy's music and Anne's vocals conjured up. ;)

What a contrast in images! I'm sitting here in my "Homer" pajamas and slippers listening to this classy song. 8)
Maybe I should change into something more appropriate. ;D

Great big band tune, love it.

Well, if Billy can play jazz piano/guitar like that for real, he should be doing it full-time if he isn't already. Love the tune. I usually don't pay attention to lyrics but these always make me smile (and glad I'm single).
The only thing that doesn't quite sit right is the harmonies on the vocals. They sound great and were well done - they just shatter the illusion of hearing a real big band on stage. I don't think I've ever really heard backup vocals or harmony vocals on jazz tunes (excepting groups like Manhattan Transfer) even though there's no real reason not to do them.
Next time ask me to try a sax solo. :)

Love it!

Peter, I'd be delighted to have you on sax again sometime. Still love your solo in "Cream of Depression Soup". ;)
