Hey all, Here's a country tune about a man with a love hate relationship with whiskey. I know there are a lot of country songs written on this subject, but still I thought I'de put in my 2 cents ;D. It's based on a true story told to me by an old boy I met outside the food bank in the little town I live in. He was sitting on the sidewalk with a bottle of Jack in his hand, and as I sat down next to him just to visit, he looked at me and said "this damn whiskey!" Then he proceeded to tell me all about it. Since I'de been in his shoes at one point in my life, I thought I'de write this little tune. I hope you enjoy it. 8) All my gratitude goes to the wonderful collaborators on this tune! :)
PLAYERS: :)
Henry Mittnacht/Docmidnight: Telecaster
Al Bacon/Catfish: Hammond B3
Tom Diemer/TomD: Pedal Steel
Mike McKinnon/Musobass: Acoustic guitar, Vocals, Harmonica,
Slide, Bass, Percussion, and mix
Damn Whiskey
This damn whiskey, in my hand
Keeps me out, of the promise land
It's like a gun, at my head
But I'll be drinking whiskey, till I'm dead.
The preacher told me, I had to stop,
He said "there aint no drunkard, goin' up"
But I just laughed, and told him "hell no"
Cause if there aint no whiskey, I don't want to go
I get up in the morning, and fill my glass to the top
Then all day long, I do it over again
Then at night, I pass out
From too much damn whiskey
When I'm feeling guilty, old Jack's right by my side
But try hard not to judge me, cause you aint in my skin
But if you were, you'd go find
Some more damn whiskey
Well I had a wife, and I had a house
I had a job, and I have a son
But now I'm livin', under Caney bridge
And I'll be drinkin' whiskey, long as I live
Hey! you wanna pass that bottle over here?!
Oh come on man!

This is very nice Mike. You really sat down beside this guy and had a visit? Nobody around here would do anything like that ... no trust!! I guess cause our population is over 1,000,000 people now.

Thanks Casia, he was a lonely lost soul, for whatever reason, if we don't hang out with these folks a little, and listen to their life lessons, maybe buy them a sandwich , and just be their friend for a while, we are selling ourselves short IMHO 8) They're just folks down on their luck. Besides, I lived on the streets of L.A. for awhile. ;D

Love it Mike... other than the wife and kids, this song could of been about my oldest brother. He's been dry now for a few years, but the damage is already done. :-[

Thanks so very much y'all! Your comments are very much appreciated! That's the thing about this topic, a lot of folks can relate. Either first hand, or knowing someone else who is dealing with it . The guy I got the inspiration from didn't care if his drinking killed him physically, and spiritually, and he had already destroyed his family because he loved, and hated being a drunk. :-[ :-\ :'(.

Hi Mike,
Nicely done track. The production ticks off all the right boxes for the genre.
Great performances by everyone on board and the finished sound does justice to the 'story-teller' lyric.
Great bass and very nice guitar picking as well.
Am I correct in assuming this is your first completed self-penned song on MCS. If so, many congratulations and the first of many more I'm sure.

Mike,
this is excellent in all parts! It's one of my favourite songs so far from MCS!!! And what a true story. I love your song.
Great performances by all involved, love the pedal steel. Hey your acoustic picking is great too!
