Title: Sometimes People Change
Post by: jimbo on April 02, 2012, 02:23:33 PM
Hello all,

I have pleasure in posting this song as finished, and with heartfelt thanks and gratitude to the following members:

PVD ( Paul Dempsey) for writing such a superb lyric to fit one of my tunes
Christina Britton for such a clear heartfelt vocal (and for giving me the encouragement to sing the backing vox's)

This has become a really great song thanks to these two people, and it goes to show what a great site this is!!
For the techies amongst you, all the guitar parts (Washburn D20 acoustic & a cheap Strat copy), drum programing, backing vox and vst's were recorded and mixed by me on Cubase 6.5, Christina recorded her vox and I put it into Cubase!

So, here are Pauls wonderfull lyrics:

Sometimes People Change lyrics by Paul Dempsey

Sometimes the winds blow so hard
Even the mountains crumble
I know I've made some mistakes
I know that sometimes I stumbled

I try; oh I try so hard to listen
But sometimes I don't hear you
And lately I've been feeling lonely
Even when I'm near you

I didn't see it happening
One day love just wasn't there
It slipped right through my fingers
And I know it isn't fair but
Somehow I've fallen out of love
And it's hard for me to remain
(It isn't fair to put you through this)
I don't mean to cause you pain no love
But sometimes people change
(Sometimes people change)

Youv'e been so good to me honey,
You have, and I'm grateful
But its time, you know it's time,
I know you still love me,
And you'll be lost when I'm gone
But I have to listen to my heart now,
And it's telling me it's time to move on

How do I tell you that it hurts
When I think about tomorrow
(I can't see a bright tomorrow)
How will I ever rise above
This time of constant sorrow
(I can't go on if there's no love)
Somehow I've fallen out of love
And it's hard for me to remain
(Please don't ask me to stay)
I don't mean to cause you pain no love
But sometimes people change
(People change its no ones fault)
Can you let me go,
If I asked you kindly can you set me free like a bird
(Would you set me free)
Can you ever forgive me oh love
I'm sorry, so sorry, that I've changed

Hope you like it!!

Nice song guys. Very sweet sounding and I love the acoustic guitar.  8)  I wish I heard this while you were working on it. I'm finding the vocals too loud. They should be up front but I think they're overpowering the music. I'm at work listening and I keep trying to turn it down to a respectable level but when I do I can't hear the instrumentation.  :-\  It's a really nice song and Christina's vocals sound great.  :)

Thanks guys!

Dave, I only listen through cans when I am recording or mixing or in the car, I will have a play tonight to drop the vox a little :-[

Doc, thanks mate, as you have probably gathered that is me doing a little backing vox, and I'm quite getting used to the idea of me singing now.....it doesn't sound ( or feel ) so strange :)

Cheers guys!

Jim. It may be more an issue of eq. I listened again at home with my cans and the levels are not too bad. On my speakers at work the vocals really jump out and the instruments fall back. It's amazing how different systems interpet things differently. Did you cut the highs and lows on the vocals?  ???  They seem to be very mid/high range only and a bit piercing.

Hi Dave,

Yes I did cutthe lows, so I willhave a little play tonight and see what I can do!

Is it only Christina's vocals that are the problem or does it apply to my BV's as well? Is there a standard level I sould be loking for??

Thanks for the help mate!

I can give a better listen tonight when I get back in the studio. I only focused on Christina's last night. Maybe too much was cut on the lows ? It seems to loose too much body. Maybe Cosmic Dolphin can comment. He's got a pretty good set of ears.  :)

Hi Dave,

I have listened to the track again, using my standard cans and then my sons Dr Dre "posh" ones and the difference is stageering as it is via the same computer!!

I have re-ED'd the vox tracks and would appreciate you letting me know if its an improvement on the original  :-\

This mixing lark is a lot harder than the actual recording init :-[

Thanks for giving me a bit of guidance mate!

Just listened to the new mix - sounds great!!

It's got a 70s singer songwriter vibe to it.

Christina's vocal and JIm's guitar work are top drawer and complement each other beautifully!

The backing vocals are a nice touch!!

Enjoyed the listen, well done!

Thanks guys!

I just did what I was told :)

And whats wrong with the 70's? It was when I was in my prime :) :)

It sounds really good, tks for letting me be involved with this wonderful piece.  It was fun working with Christina and yourself to get the right structure for this.  It truly is one of my favorites.

Till the next.

A nice comment from another site:

Paul , you just never fail to be involved in top pro tracks. - please convey my admiration on to Jim and all involved. the spoken part of the vocal is also quite cinematic.

Nice track, the acoustics sound nice. Could have probably had them a bit fuller sounding on the first section before the bass came in.

Very hard to mix on headphones and then have it translate accurately.

Good job  :)

Hi CD,

Thanks for listening! The acoustic guitar is my Washburn D20 through a mike, and then some slight FX's (mainly chorus) on some of the tracks!

And you are correct about using headphones! It drives me mad sometimes but, until I can get my hands on some reasonable studio monitors, I will have to carry!!
What really staggers me is the difference between listening through different headphones! I have got to the stage where I only use one set, get it to where I think its right, listen to it in the car, then re-adjust until I'm perfectly happy! Sometimes I think I am keeping the CD manufacturing business going all on my own! I must have had about 15 CD's with this track alone before I was satisfied!!
