Title: Wooden Sam
Post by: stoman on May 26, 2012, 01:09:46 PM
I hope you all enjoy this song. We had a great team, and I for one did enjoy working on it. :)

Thanks to everybody who helped getting this done!

Wooden Sam

Mike Basil: Lead Vocal
Gary Miller: Rhythm Guitar
Mick Lovering: Lead Guitar
Andy Gupta: Bass
Todd Vierra: Drums
John Scunziano: Lyrics
Composed by Steffen Offermann & Mike Basil
Mixed & Mastered by Steffen Offermann

Time for another show - strings guide my every move
No choice of where I go - I've more than paid my dues
When will I get my dream - just to be free and clear
I want to jump and scream - but there's no one to hear

Somebody set me free
Somebody cut my strings
I want to try and stand on my own

They call me Wooden Sam
And they pull all the strings
They never cut me slack
Just make me dance and sing

Somebody set me free
Somebody cut my strings
I want to try and stand on my own

Somebody set me free
Somebody cut my strings
I want to try and stand on my own

I'm just a marionette - with dreams of breaking free
from these bonds
The people see me smile, not knowing that it's just
Painted on

Somebody set me free
Somebody cut my strings
I want to try and stand on my own

I see how others live
No strings to hold them back
I'll never know until I try

Somebody set me free
Somebody cut my strings
I want to try and stand on my own

Sounds great Steffen, this one has now come full-circle... from title to total. :)
Wonder where this would have went if your title was Peanut Butter. LOL
I really love how each individual contribution stands out!!

Feels great to be in the finished section.  :)

It was a great experience working with all of you.
Everyone should be proud of the accomplishment.

I just noticed that I mislabelled the files - the average dynamic range is 12 dB, not 11 dB. Just in case anybody cares ... :) 8)

It was actually inspired by Mad mgazine's take on Moby Dick and Capt Sam Ahab :)

It was an epic battle - Capt Ahab would gain an advantage after every encounter with Mopy Grape, but always at a cost - he would lose a body part.

First to go was his parrot.....replaced with a wooden replica. This went on, punctuated with a few commercial breaks hosted by presidential nominees telling themselves how good they were, and by the time the Whale was finally vanquished, chopped into blubber, and sold to Alaska at a huge profit, most of Capt Ahab was wood!!!

To continue on this sad  and pithy tale....the next winter was rather harsh and they needed more heat to survive on board.....they chucked Sam Ahab into the burner.

Isnt this what it was all about Steffen, John??

 ;D ;D

That's exactly how i read it!  :o

so, Sam, was dangling by strings as bait for Moby Grape...

Fella was chum, and nobody would cut him loose   8)

it makes sooo much sense now!  :D

Steely Dan's got nuttin' on Wooden Sam...

Sam's the man  ::)

It's best not to reveal the true story behind a song. I'm sure Don McLean still laugh's his ass of when he hears all the theories about the true meaning of "American Pie". :) 8)

Very true Steffen...the actual story can never be told....according to Men In Black its about an edible UFO!!

;D ;D I'm glad Andy and Johnny know the tragic tale of Sam... there seems to be a sliver of truth in there somewhere. ;) :D

Cool track...nice to hear Basil on Vox...he's a classy singer.

Prefered the first mix Steffen to the new one....the original sounded fuller and more dynamic.

Thanks, Mark.

Listening with fresh ears I still clearly prefer the new mix though. It is more transparent, balanced to my ears. The previous one sounded muddy and somehow "strange" IMO.

I'll just leave both versions online, so everyone can choose the one they like better. :)
