Title: The Bone King
Post by: rightonthemark on September 03, 2012, 05:12:40 PM
Finally my first collab is complete.
However, it was not without many bumps in the road.
Before I get to the song & the credits there are a few others who need recognition that were instrumental in making this possible.
First there was the latency issue to which mickbrit55 fixed.
Then there was the unwanted noise issue to which CosmicDolphin fixed.
Then there was the track alignment issue to which snowdoguk fixed.
These issues could have easily derailed this project without those who leant their expertise to remedy them.
There are no words sufficient enough to express my gratitude for the support I received here at MCS.
So without further ado I present to you...(& I believe I got all the names correct --- any mistakes please let me know)...
The Bone King
Paul Dempsey - lyrics
Dwayne Vincent - guitar
Andreas Glummert - bass
John Wooten - drums
George Williams - vocals
Mike Woodford - guitar & mix/master
Mark A Shrider - music & guitar

The Bone King

(verse 1)
High in the mountains
Where foul winds blow
Stands an unholy shrine
Of an evil bloodline
It knows no mercy
And the king sits alone
Upon his throne
A throne made of bones

(verse 2)
His enemies cower
When they hear his name
Terror they can't define
Fear runs up their spine
Fear they've never known
And he sits on his throne
A throne made of bones

(chorus)
a throne of bones
it's not of stone
a throne of bones
leave him alone

(verse 3)
A skeleton fortress
Of nameless souls
Bowing to a design
Like a spreading vine
From an evil seed
The fear is sewn
As he sits on his throne
A throne made of bones

(verse 4)
His enemies cower
When they hear his name
Terror they can't define
Fear runs up their spine
Fear they've never known
And he sits on his throne
A throne made of bones

(chorus)

(lead)

(bridge)
He sips his wine and it drips from his lips
Sav'ring the taste, of those he laid to waste
damnation & judgement from the Bone King

spreading his disease, not hearing their pleas
Pity for the weak, has a hollow ring
no purpose or meaning to the Bone King

(chorus)

(outro lead)

Thanks to everyone for their input & performances.

I enjoyed working on this, and I like how it turned out.

Well done Mark :). Mind you, you had a massive weight of experience on-board to help you through this, actually I reckon about 25% of the rock crowd that are busy on this site on your roster. I don't know if you realised, but we've all worked together for some time before you came along (several of us working together for years  >:D). I hope this is the first of a long line of succesful songs from you.

This was the first track in my new less full-on singing style.

There's a lot of guitar at the end, but it's all good !!

Congrats Mark, a perfect start!

Thanks for having me! I really enjoyed working with you and all others, hope there are more to come.
If you ever need a basstrack, I'll do my very best! :)

Well done everybody, thanks for this enjoyable collab!

Mark:

Great final here, glad you found the Bone King lyric fit, but please take some credit for it, you did add sections and rearranged some.
Anyway, great to be involved with your first collab.  I am sure there will be more.

Great job by everyone.

Thanks Paulo for the listen & kind words.

George, Andreas & Paul it truly was a pleasure working with each of you on this tune.
Performances were top notch.
And Paul, the words are pretty much yours; i merely rearranged some of them.

Indeed there's plenty more music to come & your contributions will be greatly appreciated.

thanks...

Mark

Thanks a ton Mike.
Without you sorting out the alignment issue this tune may have died.
And without your lead playing it wouldn't sound quite as cool as it does.

F**k me!! Where did this come from?! Excellent gentlemen!  Iron Maiden will be nicking that middle 8 riff for sure. George you've come such a long way, since Paradox, well done!  John, as alarmingly tight and 'on the money' as ever. Mike is always great so no point in commenting on his performance... but you're really coming into your own as a mix meister - you've definitely climbed over that plateau - very impressed.  Andreas a 'solid and true' bass performance as I'd expect from you.

To the rest of you guys who I don't yet know... congratulations to you too.  A fine collab and it sounds fab too. ;D ;D ;D ;D

Hey Mark,

First of all many congratulations on completing your first collab - and a worthy one it is too!!

A fine composition and outstanding performances indeed from everyone involved...there are too many highlights to list, but the bass run in the breakdown, GG's sustained note around 3:40, and the array of guitar solos stand out!!

Well done all.

Paul, another of your incredible lyrics "slammed" to bed huh....quite the story teller :).

Andy

I always loved that Bill Withers song where holds the long note, "Lovely Day", so it was a chance to give it a go myself.

Henry

no I've never had singing lessons.

I have read a lot about it, and worked through Kevin Richard's free material on youtube.

Also, I participate on the site "The Modern Vocalist" to try to get some free advice and critique of my work. This went on there. It got no criticism, but lots of positive comparisons to Kiss and a few to Rush.

here's an alternative mix that i requested from snowdoguk who also did the original mix.
the difference is this version is minus the lead ditty during the main riff at the start of the song and again each time taking the chorus back to the verse.
with the drums Jwoo did i think this sounds heavier.

thanks again to Mike for his help in getting this to completion as well as to everyone else who participated.

enjoy...

Great song, teriffic vocal performance by GG. Very catchy chorus.

It's a shame the mix wasn't better, the drums come across very boxy and dont really do the performance justice but it's a big learning curve so congrats on completing your first collab with such good material and performances.
