What Fathers Do for Daughters

[Verse]
I ain't mean to kill that turtle,
But it made my daughter cry
When I explained that popping sound
Was like her red-eared slider.

The strangest thing I've done
Was backtrack on the road
After I went and fetched a shovel.
What will I tell my wife when I get home?

Now there's a bag of turtle goop
In a hole in our back yard
Lord, the things a daddy won't do
When his little girl takes a thing too hard.

But the good lord makes the man
Who hates to see his daughter cry,
And the devil makes the man
That doesn't mind.

[Chorus]
When the girl says, "Daddy, please,"
You know your world is over in the blink of an eye.
When the girl says, it has to be like this,
And then kisses your cheek,
You just want to die.

[Verse]
Now I'm lighting up a coffin nail.
Lord, I hate being Christian sometimes.
Well, an old boy hurt my daughter deep.
I'd love to kill him, I've the mind.

So I fire up this Bic,
Maybe somehow ease my mind,
Another cancer stick in a series
On the longest night of my life.

"What would Jesus do?," ain't helping.
Sometimes, I hate that guy.
This is once I'd love to tag myself
Onto the devil's side.

[Chorus]
But when the girl says, "Daddy, please,"
You know your world is over in the blink of an eye.
When the girl says, it has to be like this,
And then kisses your cheek,
You just want to die.

[Verse]
It weren't supposed to happen this way
'Cause I said my prayers and toed the line
She begged me just to let her be
Promised everything'd be fine

But I'm her daddy, so it hurts deep
Like it won't get better with time.
God, I'll take her place if you let me
I'm sure it wouldn't be no crime.

[Chorus]
When a girl says daddy let me go
You never thought you'd find
You can watch her find The Lord;
Cry, and cry, and cry.

But I still tell her story
It's the best one of my life.

I say a prayer,
And I know we'll be alright.
