Title: Break With Protocol
Post by: Studioplayer on January 24, 2007, 07:59:28 PM
Yeah man !! Pretty happy with this tune. :) Actually I'm pretty happy with any of the songs that have been created at MCS. This song came together very, very quickly and that was due to all of the people involved. No foolin' around man! A BIG thanks guys !! Vocals & lyrics are just top notch. The solo's are killer. It's like a Battle Royale' going on. I keep looking for James Bond.

It's been Testafied  :)

I will post an ape soon

(The idea is the spy being taken into the forest to be despatched re espionage!)

Break with Protocol

In the forest stands a tree so tall
If no-ones there who will hear it fall
It's roots have dug through many years
Covert party approaching near
An end in sight, transgressors justice
Unexpected, but possible life-twist
To kneel, resigned to meet lead's destiny
Or from the bough on twine to sway

All because you made a break with protocol,
You broke the rules when you set out your stall
When representing the few, your eye strayed from the ball
There's no escape don't even try to crawl
You broke with protocol

Rules are there, some say to be broken
Unwritten words so softly spoken
Body language that's never seen
Behind grand gestures, so clearly token
Whispered direction from unlikely places
Concise instructions, but never faces
If they fall on deaf ears are they heard
Inaudible guidance that leaves no traces

All because you made a break with protocol,
You broke the rules when you set out your stall
Representing the few, you let your eye slip from the ball
There's no escape, there will be no curtain call

There's just one chance you had at this
You prepared the hit in confusion's mist
The point is made to few, not all
You must never, never break with protocol

All because you made a break with protocol,
You broke the rules when you set out your stall
Representing the few, you took your eye off of the ball
There's no escape, there won't be no curtain call

You only had one chance at this
Prepared the hit but in confusion missed
The point is made to few, not all
You must never, never break with protocol

You must never break with protocol
You must never, never break with protocol

Listened to Nicks mix the day he posted it on the project thread. Nice work to everyone involved.
Nicks mix is excellent. When you guys were working on this song I made some comments regarding production. Had some concerns and  so I posted some feed back. But Nick has taken care of those for the most part.  First of all I think Paul's keys solo is not only awesome but original and inventive. It goes really well with R4M's solo work too. And R4M your solo is very cool too and I like the way it enter twines with Pauls solo.
Yes you have the next James Bond tune here but the James bond people don't know it's been written well ahead of the next movie and Bonds  next girl for that matter.

Congratulations

Thanks Tubes, much appreciated bro.

Dave, I made a little revision to the credits my friend........your name is first, it was your original bed track pal, so you wrote the music!!

I only took the liberty of slicing and dicing it around a little and yeah I did write and sing the lyrics, but that was only in response to the inspiration generated from your excellent bed track bro. You get the primary credit for this Dave, not me!!!!

Thanks everyone involved, your input has been absolutely awesome and I've really enjoyed being part of this one. :) ;D :) ;D

Another superb vocal. Really enjoyed the solos too. I liked that break when the drums stopped....got my attention. As always, Nick delivers on an excellent mix!

Great job everyone!

Ok Steve, It's all formality to me. As long as everyone gets their fair share when the song makes a kazillion dollars. Not paying the drummer though.  ;D

Thanks for listening Tubes, Jeff, & David. Appreciate it.  8)

I do believe that the lead vocal is being masked a bit by the backing guitars and keys.

Hi folks,
Still in bed, just got up after receiving a phone call from Germany, from Steve (Stephen Moeller) and it got me standing up.
Great mix Nick... Really, really sounding hot. Much thanks, you all, for letting me in.

But, I don't remember having that delayed playing after the solos. Was that an option or is something wrong with the files I uploaded?

Guys... I will have this one playing all over the place, I swear  :o

Paulo !! Really happy you dropped by. Hell of a job brother !! Get well soon man. We need your fine keyboard playing around here.  8)

The delay may be something that Nick added. I don't think I did ???

I'm glad you really let loose on this one. It works well. That trade off between you and Bill is classic !!!  ;D

Paulo...get well soon...we miss ya!

I copied an organ part from earlier in the song because after the rollercoaster ride of the solo's, the bottom dropped out and I needed it for the chorus. I thought it matched ok...maybe I just didn't match it right.  :-[

So now you must get well and fix it! :)

Take care,

Nick

I think Dave did good on the bed for this and then that was so superbly augmented by these awesome solos by Paulo and Bill........the icing being the work being Testafied............my question is -

WHO IS GOING TO TARGET THIS AS THE THEME (BOTH SCRIPT AND SOUNDTRACK) FOR THE NEXT BOND MOVIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Loved doing it guys and gives me goosebumps to listen to..........thanks!

Thanks Caine. Appreciate the kind words.  :) This is one of those songs that goes to show the talent pool around here. We have some amazing musicians in the wings. All I had to do is lay down the bed track and then Steve comes in with killer vocals and lyrics. Bill and Paulo conspire to lay out a fun and exciting lead track and then Nick finalizes everything. It came together very quickly. I'd do another with these guys any day.  8)

Thanks for reminding me again Caine :)

Thanks Dave, but every song needs a foundation and you certainly provided that....then it was just a living thing that rapidly grew.............I'd be more than happy to do more of the same (or similar) bro!!

Excellent playing by the others...............cheers Paulo and Bill...........and of course the man getting married today.........all the best Nick!!

Title: Remix: Break With Protocol
Post by: CosmicDolphin on May 28, 2007, 12:11:03 AM
I played a bunch of songs when I first joined the site and this was my favourite, so when Dave lent his talents to one of my tracks I asked him if I could have a go at doing my own mix of it.

I think Nick did a great job on the original, but no-one had taken me up on any mixing offers at that time and I just wanted to see if it could get more of a 'in ya face' radio friendly sound with what had been laid down already...as much for my own practice and amusement as anything......It turned out to be tougher than I'd bargained for !

What I wanted was a more powerful drum sound, the vocals a bit more upfront and for it to sound larger than life - kind of like everything turned up to eleven, wall of sound kinda thing.

Did I succeed ???  Well partly, and partly not....I'll let others be the judge of what worked and what didn't......It didn't quite come out how I heard it in my head but maybe 75% of the way there.....and it took a lot longer than I normally take to mix a track - which I guess is testament to Nick because he didn't have anything to refer back to.  Have a listen for yourselves and let me know what you think...I've gone past the point of hearing it properly myself now I think.

I was in two minds about whether to post it or not , and when the thread came back to life I thought 'what the Heck ' it might spark a debate on mixing and mastering and how different the same song can turn out when mixed by different people.  I'll post a list of changes if anyone wants to know.

Thanks to Dave for kindly let me have a play around with this great song, and it was a learning experience.

Cosmic dolphin, you did good bro and thanks for the input, This is Dave's song and so he controls the direction my friend!

The mix is sure larger than life but IMHO the vocals get slightly left in a non-defined void :-[ :-[

It is nice to use the whole sonic soundscape but beware of it becoming so wide that it loses coherence, just my Humble Opinion.

Great stab at a kicking rock song Cosmic but INHO opinion the mix becomes overly wide :-[

The next Bond movie soundtrack...............we'll see :) :)

CD, Nice Job.

I feel the drums get lost. The other instruments sound good. A bit wide but nice tones. I think the vocal focus and kick drive suffer a little. Get thos back in and I think you are done.

Nice job,

Nick

Hey Cosmic. I'll check it out soon and give you my honest opinion. You did pick a very difficult song to mix. That's why I gave it to Nick to do. ;D No way in hell I could do it the justice as he did.  Keep in mind it was all in fun and I see you now have lots of tunes looking for mixers. It's all good practice.  :) I also did let Nick know that you where taking a stab at it. As I have mentioned before I have also posted the song giving Nick credit for the mixing & mastering. Keep at though and it's great to get opinions. There's so much to learn from a lot of the guys here that have been doing it for a long time. Nick, Cary, Davidinoz and others. To be honest I'd much rather pass the mixing on to others. It's not really an area that I totally enjoy. It makes my brain hurt. ;D Athough it is something we all need to know to a certain extent. Anyways I'll give it a listen really soon.

Cheers, Dave

Cosmic. Just had a few good listens tonight in the studio and cranked it up. Wow!!! Sounds pretty good man !!! Totally different approach than what Nick did. Much better than the first mix you sent me. I'd have to agree with the guys that the vocals could come out a bit more. They could be a bit warmer as well. I think the drums could also have a bit more beef to them. Seems to lack in the low end a bit. You definitely got a really wide sound happening and a good radio mix. I can see why your getting some good comments on the mixes that your doing for other songs. You have a vision of what you want to achieve and are getting it. It's not bad and I really enjoyed listening to it. It's really a different approach and I think your getting there.  8) Damn I haven't really listened to this song for a while and forgot how much I enjoyed it. All the guys on this just really let loose. What a blast !!!!!  8)

Thanks for playing around with this. I'm going back out to the studio. Drink a beer or two and listen some more.   >:D

Title: Re: Break With Protocol
Post by: CosmicDolphin on May 28, 2007, 10:41:42 AM
Thanks Guys.....It's morning time again here and mixes always sound different than the night before.  I did the mastering whilst they showed the season finale to 'Lost' here during the Ad breaks !

Listening back now you're right about the kick drum, it just doesn't punch through how I'd like it too - in the proper mix it cuts through with alot of definition and if I was doing this for real for somebody i'd probably go back and try to fix it.

Vocally I understand where you're coming from and there's probably work that could be done to just tie it in to the song more as it sounds like it's come from another place at the moment - a slightly 'tacked on' feel which was a by product of trying to have it more upfront. Again if I was doing it for real I'd experiment with that more and try a bunch of different reverbs to get it sitting better.

I'll cut you a deal when the Bond people come knocking -  Nick can do the stereo version, I'll do the 5.1 mix !!

I might keep it as my  'rainy day' project, see if I can't iron out those last couple of issues at some point when I get the other tracks done.  Thanks for all you feedback guys.  I'll post a little list of what I did if anyone's interested.

Title: Re: Break With Protocol

Really good job Cosmic.  8)  I did notice the lack of kick drum as well but I'd say you got the mix pretty damn good minus a couple of small issues. I think because you got the mix so wide and full it seems to wrap around the vocals some. Not sure how you'd fix that.  It's not really a matter of just bringing up the volume on the vocals. I don't think that would do it. Somehow making them more present in the mix. ??? I wouldn't mind seeing a list of the things you had done. I'm always interested in the mixing process. I really have lots to learn in that area and for me it's helps to 'see' what was done.

We should be having a 'mixing and mastering clinic' around here. Have mix-offs on different songs. Focus on different tools such as eq, reverbs etc. Cary started something like that but I think it proves to be a lot of work running a clinic. It's too bad because a lot of us players could benifit by the mixing skills that you guys have.

Good mix man. It had me enjoying the song again !!!  :)

Dave

Title: Re: Break With Protocol
Post by: CosmicDolphin on May 28, 2007, 06:43:33 PM
Glad you liked it so much Dave.......In fact I'll probably call it done if you're enjoying that version so much and move on to something else.

These are the broad brushstrokes of what I did:-

Overall  - I set up a buss in Sonar for Drums / Bass / Keys / Vocals / Guitars and and early reflections reverb from Waves Rverb on one send and PSP Lexicon84 Delay on the other with a 16th note style delay.  I sent various amounts of instuments to each effect, and used a hi-pass filter on the stereo fx returns to stop it clogging the low mids.

I used the busses I'd set up so I could do broad balance changes and mute whole sections easily whilst working.

Drums - I had trouble because it was a stereo file so I cheated by using the free demo version of Drumagog - the two free drum sounds matched the original quite well so I overlayed these onto the stereo tracks which I'd compressed, enhanced and put through Waves trans-x ( transient enhancer ) for more definition without eq - balanced the three elements and I put Waves L1 on the Drum buss with maximum threshold to catch any overs.  I later decided the cymbals weren't sounding so great  - a bit piercing  - so I pulled them back with a notch filter eq.

Bass - I fiddled with the bass a while, then eventually found a patch on Guitar Rig 2's bass section I liked - it seemed to bring the mid sound of the bass out more , made it brighter.  I used a hi-pass filter at about 55hz to take out any subsonic stuff that my smallish monitors may not reveal  and some overall gentle compression to even it out level wise.

Guitars - The guitars for me were probably the thing I struggled the most with.  I tried several things to get them sitting, but not too bright or dull or obscuring the vocals and bass which they tended to do.  In the end i took off most of what I'd done originally and tried PSP vintage warmer - there's a preset called something like ' Vintage Guitar ' which basically rolls off alot of the top end, boosts the low end and compresses the hell out of the signal...well it was a bit OTT so I used it as a starting point, added back about half of the top end, backed off the compression about 50% and too some of the bass boost off. That seemed to work quite well so I left it at that.

Vocals - I didn't really do that much to the vocals, just a bit of overall eq on the lead - sent it to the delay send and put a short plate sound on it.  The backing vocals I did similar but used a stereo widener too.

Keys - I spent a fair bit of time eq'ing and sorting levels out on the keys.  I put the Hammond through a rotary speaker sim to give it width and movement and took some of the low mid frequencies out.  Then I sent all the keys to their own buss which had another Vintage Warmer but a less obvious one that just emulates tape saturation and again some delay and reverb to help them sit and some extra width from the widener plugin.

For the mixdown, I did some fader rides where I recorded the automation in Sonar and used my control surface.  I did the Drums in one pass - to give the impression of when a real drummer will play harder in the choruses , the bass - again dropped a little for the verses and upped a little for the choruses and sections of the lead break.  Then the lead vocals, same idea really.  Once I had a mixdown I was happy with , I used harbal to check for any rogue frequency anomolies, which tend to be down to working in a small room ( it's about 8x8 ft, hence my mixes that tend towards bass lite I think ) then used Waves Multiband Compressor and L3 Limiter to process the bounced down wave file get more volume.

And that was it !  Well there were all sorts of other little things I did, undid, re-did, but that's the overall gist of it.

CosmicDolphin

Cool info. I'll have to check some of those things out. I have guitar rig 2 but never use it. The PSP vintage warmer sounds interesting. Something to look into. A rotary speaker is a cool idea for the keys. It's pretty cool how everyone has a different approach to mixing. Like I said we need a mix clinic.  :)

Thanks man & I hope you had fun with it.

Bill (r4m) had suggested awhile back that I should post this song on GarageBand. After many useless reviews (most people don't say much other than a few words) I figured I should go back in there and delete my account. So far GarageBand is kind of a joke as people just want you to play their music and could really care less about yours. Anyways the final review was really nice and I thought I'd share it with you guys. In the end someone actually listened and got it.  :)

Firey and "smokin"
Sound:Intro is strong-gripping right from the start, such a pace!!
Guitars add punch. An interesting sound on lead highly electronic adds a catchy unusuality (is it a roland guitar Synth?). Good job
Rhythm section is powerful and keyboard lines work well Good Job...

Lyrics are well expressed. and clearly heard Good Job..
The breakdown/solosection smokes.Lots of passion. I love the trades. Not of that around at the moment so this is a brave move as far as I'm concerned.
Arrangement is firey and well conceived. Good Job...
Vocals have an interesting tone. you deliver well and with passion. Your pitch is fine and lyric values are strong good use of hook lines
GOOD JOB!!

MIX: works well everything is in balance nice eqs and appropriate
compression values. Drums sound fine down through net. This is a great sound I hope this goes well for you... Good Luck

SOUNDS LIKE... i dont care It just sound good!!!

This is one of my favourite collaborative songs 8) 8) 8) 8)

The series that inspired the lyrics is called Spooks and the third episode of the current series is on tonight, every bit as good as the episode that equated to the Break With Protocol :) :)

I just listened and rocked my socks off again, great work everyone and I agree about the solo trading between you guys Bill and Paulo........ACE!!!

I just listened and rocked my socks off again, great work everyone and I agree about the solo trading between you guys Bill and Paulo........ACE!!!

The song was already rolling fast when I posted some keys. I remember you Steve saying something like - "This is gonna be huge", LOL"...

... At the same time Tubes didn't like the keys approach, now go wonder  ;D...

... The Solo trade was settled by e-mail between me and Billy . We arranged that we'd play some bars and leave space for each other... Billy took the lead and did what you hear and sended the files to me. I just had to fill the rest... I don't think that it took much more than an hour to trade all this back and forward, LOL...

I remember that when I received Billy's files In a sudden, maybe half an hour after, he was mailing me again saying - "I Can't wait to listen to what you're doing there" HAHAHAHAHA  ;D

But the bed was putted together by Steve who left all that empty space ready for madness.

Now I'm looking like an old guy recalling all this but at that time I was in bed shape and I was playing each one like if it was my last one, eh eh.

Wow.. this was originally posted in 2007. Has it been that long?  :o I guess you could call this one a classic now. It was definitely one of the better collabs from the past. Way too much fun.  :D It really came together quite nicely. Steve's lyrics and vocals are superb and the solos are just amazing. I still listen to this one often. I really can't find anything to nitpick about it. I don't think we could have done it much better. (Actually that's not true. When it was redone for the Bond submission Todd did the drums and took it up another notch.)  Gotta thank you guys for such great musicianship and for taking the time to really work things out. You gave it your all. Another excellent example of what can come out of this place. MCS ROCKS!! Thanks Nick & and thanks for the mixing. The icing on the cake!!  8) 8) 8)

Actually Mark, you helped on it. I have you listed as credit. Nick did the final mix.  Billy also added strings. That also added another element to it.  :)  In some ways I prefer the Bond version over the original because of the additional players but the solo was shortened. Still works really good though.

TallPaul was also workong on a submission. It was really crazy around here then. Good times!!  :D 8)

You must have been reading my mind... Yesterday I went here looking for this one and listening to it, lol.

It's still one of the best collabs I've ever been involved with.
