Title: 1984 (prog rock) (Andy/Eric/Adam/Chris/J/Argle)
Post by: AndyG6508 on April 05, 2009, 12:33:51 PM
Hi MCS,

This is a song based on the novel 1984 by George Orwell.

The track was completed in mid 2008, with the help of a few talented musicians (off-site) and a rough mix done.

Since then, J (Jay Schankman) has painstakingly put together a rich assortment of keyboard/organ textures, so I thought I'd get this song mixed and mastered properly with the new keys tracks in. Argle (Adam Kirby) very kindly stepped in to perform the mix/mastering duties, and he has done a super job, once again.

Hope you guys (and gals) like it. Thanks!!!

1984 (c) Andy Gupta 2008, 2009

Intro: B1 B2 figure

By the 60s the world was devastated
The Nuclear Wars had taken their toll;
Through Revolution the Party was born
Through the constant presence of Big Brother
And surveillance through the Thought Police;
The Inner Party gained Control.

Manufactured lies at the Mini-true
Altered facts to suit the Party needs,
Tools of Newspeak and Double Thought
Waging endless war through the Mini-pax
The day's ally is tomorrow's foe:
Using War to retain (the) hierarchy

Only a few were left who could dimly recall
The days gone by and how it used to be;
In the Golden Country when people were still free.
Yet there were rumours of a Brotherhood
Running Conspiracy through the Book,
A ray of hope for the few who still believed.

Long Instrumental Break

Control the Past to control Future
Control the present to control the Past
Where future's a boot stamping on a human face
No false pretense of an Utopia
Seeking Power for solely Power's sake
Through a world of pain, fear and treachery.

And there were young minds of this generation
Brainwashed into the Party Line
Old human values were slowly leached away
Yet there were rumours of the Brotherhood
Who's existence was through the Book
A ray of hope for those who didn't belong.

Outro (fade)

Personnel:

Chris Powers - Vocals
Eric Koskas - Drums
Adam Rodeh -Guitars including all solos
Andy Gupta - Bass, composition & lyrics
Jay Schankman (J)- Keyboards & Organ
Adam Kirby (Argle) - SFX, Mixing/Mastering

Marc,

What can I say? :) - thank you so much.

Im overwhelmed with the positive reviews I have got, and some of them have been from my fav musicians on MCS.

I was lucky with this one, basically everyone came in and laid their parts and the track kind of took care of itself.

Yes, the vocals are great (this was the band i was hoping to put together), and then J and Argle put in the important finishing touches to make this complete.

Thanks again!
Andy

Hi Preston,

Thank you for your kind comments.

Yes, Im a big fan of the book too, and the last line is really chilling: And in the end Winston found himself loving big brother (misquote:)).

It took me 4 weeks of reading and re-reading to be able to condense the essence of the novel into a 5:30 minute song!!!

I dont listen to mainstream radio - my playlist is basically garageband, MCS and and the Rogues Gallery, not counting my CD collection.

Cheers

Hi Holger,

Im so glad you like the lyrics too, I had to work hard to get them right  :D

I had a very talented group of musicians on this , and a super "mixologist" in Argle...all I had to do was turn up and play some bass !!!!.

Great book, amazing vision... That turned on a super song... Loved it. The subtil j's synths are just great. very low but they give you the ambience.

Dave

Hey Dave,

Thanks again for the kind comments. Yes, I dig the keys loads too, our man Jay certainly pulled out the stops with some very tasty keys work/sounds!!

Cheers
Andy

Tnanks Bobby I missed this post ;),

Yes, where has all that time gone indeed........ :(

To quote a famous lyric....

There are places I remember
All my life, though some have changed
Some forever not for better
Some have gone and some remain
All these places have their moments
With lovers and friends I still can recall
Some are dead and some are living
In my life I've loved them all

And then the one day you find
Ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run
You missed the starting gun
