I meant the same.

I did that with the kick, and I also used the separated kick "ghost track" to trigger some bass compression.

The room mic trick is something I've not tried though. That's a new idea to me.

But like you said: It's no fun mixing stereo drums. On the other hand it's a good way to learn new tricks.
