Enter My Keep

Lyrics - Donna Devine
Music production and Vocals - Billy Playle

V1
A serving wench lays rushes
On the floor of hardened earth
A fire’s burning fiercely
In the Great Hall’s open hearth

V2
An axe-hewn oaken table
Heaped with spicéd wine and meat
Stands ready for the nobles
At the Royal Wedding feast

Pre-chorus
In a secret chamber, and growing insane
A woman is calling and calling again

Chorus
I’m Queen of the Castle
She screams in a fit
His woman, his bride
His virgin, his witch
My heart was his own
To love and to cherish
But he threw me down
To a dungeon to perish
I weep and I weep
Yet I’ll still bid him welcome
To enter my keep

V3
M’Lord bows to M’Lady
Leads her slowly to the throne
Past tapestries from Arras
Hiding damp on walls of stone

V4
Oh soon he’ll go a’warring
Leave his bride to pray and sew
An ermine cloak to comfort
For she fears the truth she knows

Pre-chorus
In a secret chamber, and growing insane
A woman is calling and calling again

Chorus
I’m Queen of the Castle
She screams in a fit
His woman, his bride
His virgin, his witch
My heart was his own
To love and to cherish
But he threw me down
To a dungeon to perish
I weep and I weep
Yet I’ll still bid him welcome
To enter my keep

Bridge
Once a lady-in-waiting, in velvet and rings
M’Lady’s own favourite
And also the King’s

Chorus
I’m Queen of the Castle
She screams in a fit
His woman, his bride
His virgin, his witch
My heart was his own
To love and to cherish
But he threw me down
To a dungeon to perish
I weep and I weep
Yet I’ll still bid him welcome
To enter my keep

A great collaboration but then Billy and Donna are an A-list team!!

The strong lyrics tells a compelling story and Billy's instrumentation is picture perfect as always. I really liked the heavy rock rhythm merging in and out with the minstrel/folk based interludes.

Good vocal as well.

Look forward to the next one.

Cheers
Andy

Minstrel? .......I quite like that. Thanks for your comments, Andy.

Actually, I'll be working on another song of Donna's shortly called "Know The Place". This will be a prog/rock fest along the lines of Jethro Tull/Steve Hackett/Renaissance and I wondered if I could put your name down for the bass parts? Should be good.

Billy.

Great work as always Billy! I closed my eyes and I saw an old castle on a hill and the scene. The music and the lyrics match perfectly together.

I love the celtic feeling and the rhythm changes. Great vocals Billy. I was surprised to hear your raspy voice. It was the first time that I heard you singing that way. Great!!!

Looking forward to hear more!

Well put together, I would love to see a video to compliment this great song.
Cyclone
A woman is on trial for beating her husband to death with his guitar collection.
The judge says "First offender?"
The woman says "No, first a Gibson, then a fender."
