Guys and Gals,
I'm a bit confused here. Got here 2 clips of the same mix. Everything is the same with the same settings except for the mastering compressor.
One mix has the compressor I always use and I'm used to, the other mix has a very famous vintage tubes compressor tweaked my way.

Anybody there listens to a great difference in these two mixes? I can hear a big difference  :-\

Anyone feels that one is better than the other?

I think clip A is better, and not because it's louder.  I can hear the compressor pumping in clip B.  It seems to have less dynamics also.  It could just be the settings.

Thanks for helping guys.
Cary I ended up adding the same RMS power on both clips but you say clip A sounds louder... Interesting  :)

In the first few seconds of the clips, I see my meters glowing red on clip A and only occasionally touching red on clip b.

Clip A doesn't 'seem' louder to you?

These compressors may handle the bass differently.  I think that clip A bass doesn't send the compressor into saturation the way clip B does.

No other comments from other listeners?

I liked B better. I liked the saturation. Although I think Cary is right that A handled the low end a little better. I don't really notice either one pumping. Mids in B sound better to my ears.

I know, I'm no help!  >:D

Me likes better Clip B too...

Compressor on A is the Fairchild 670 and on B Waves LinMb Multi Band comp wich I use for ages. As for the bumping that Cary talks about, I hear it too in some spots and that's due to pushing too much treshold on the compressor.

This is a topic that always makes me wonder. In my neighberhood there's a professional Studio and I know the owner... This guy got all the good stuff including this Fairchild unit and a TL Audio yellow equalizer (I dont't recal the Model but I know is famous) all in hardware... And much more goddies.

I know what many people feels about the tubes stuff and I agree that they sound hot and gives a different colour to the sound still, compared to the abilities of new equipment, I prefer the new ones.

The only tubes equipment I prefer but obviously I don't use is the amps and pre-amps for guitarists.

This compressor from Waves is one of the best compressors I've ever seen and heard. There's no Vintage stuff on earth that I would change for it.

You're not saying that a real Fairchild 670, are you?

If it's a plugin, who makes it?

It's the plugin that comes on T-Racks 3... But I'm used to listen to the results of the real one in that studio here in my neighberhood.

That must be some studio!  About 50 pieces of the original were made in the 1950's.  Collectors are paying super big bucks for working units right now - 20 to 30 thousand us dollars.

Only 50??!! I never knew that... It's not a big Studio, it's very well equiped but it's a small one in a little town. The guy got a lot old famous toys.

As Cary said that they built only 50 Fairchild 670 units it got me wondering how on earth one of those could have landed in such a small country and in such a small town studio. Yesterday I called this guy and asked him about it and, he told me that his compressor is an AT-101 which is a clone of the original.

OK, I thought it was a real one but I was wrong and Cary's suspitions were just correct.
